My daughter is only 5 months old, but how do I stop her from sucking her thumb? She doesn't want to eat because she'd rather suck her thumb and she won't stay sit-up because she's too busy trying to suck her thumb.

Each baby is different. Thumbsucking only gets in the way after the teeth have come in. She has gotten all her teeth in yet. Its a way for her to soothe herself. If she is sucking her thumb alot perhaps she is bored and needs other things to do like colorful toys to get her attention. You can try to give her other things to suck but the easiest thing I found was to put mittens on their hands when its time for a feeding. She will just end up chewing on cloth and wont get the satisfaction she is looking for til you present her with her bottle.

Good Luck :)

I hate seeing a three and four year old child sucking their thumb but a five month old is okay. She needs some comfort she will do things at her own pace.
When she is older (a year or more) then worry about the thumb sucking. You can get "Nail Biter" a clear nail polish that tastes bad so people won't want to bite their nails.

Encourage your child by talking to him or her about why it is important to stop thumb-sucking. Explain that stopping will help him or her have a beautiful smile and nice teeth. Let your child know that continuing will cause problems with how his or her teeth grow.

Use a mirror to show your child the changes happening to his or her teeth or mouth shape.

Talk about the unhealthy germs that are on our hands and how the child puts the germs in his or her mouth by thumb-sucking.

Talk to your child about becoming a "big boy" or "big girl" by stopping thumb-sucking. Remind your child that he or she may be teased for continuing thumb-sucking.

I don't have a clue. My daughter is 4 1/2 and still sucks her fingers. We've tried everything. A pacifier is so much better if you can get her to take it because you can eventually take it away from her. I cannot take my childs fingers away!
We can't find the bitter stuff to put on her nails that used to be sold in stores.

All babies need to suck. Try a soother or bottles with water but she does need to fullfill that sucking.
