It helps to have a black and white 8 x 10, a ZED card, plus black and white AND color 4x6 and wallets.

All should have your name and such on the back.

A resume if you have credits.

Most places want 8 x 10, but Central Casting, for example, likes color Wallet photos.

To be an actor, you don't need a portfolio - that is for modeling. for acting you need a 8x10 headshot. This is your business card. This is what you will submit to casting directors for different roles you feel you are right for. You can always go to open casting calls, but you'll still need the headshot - hopefully with your acting resume on the back. And if you want to be an actor, do not go to central casting, they are a background service better known as an extra. You can be an extra for the money and experience, but you should never list extra work on a resume as you are simply a prop - harsh but true. Besides misrepresenting your credits always has a way of coming back and biting you in the fanny.

If you are walking into a Broadway casting call, yes, it would be good to have a headshot, resume and a few prepared songs and monologues.

If you are auditioning for a community theater, it would help to have the above, but the people auditioning for you are more understanding that you are just starting and will probably have a camera there to take your photo (so they remember who you are later when they are casting the show!) and can have you sing something like "Happy Birthday" so they know your vocal range.

Break a leg.
