There is some connection between the senses having an overload and not being able to use both at once. Kinda funny... but even better is this: Why is it when I try to look to the left, while driving, that my wheel goes that way a little bit as well? Sheesh, I will be in serious musicless trouble if I am really looking hard for a road!

Probably so you can concentrate on what you are looking at. Just like you should be doing while you are driving.

Your brain is confused by two different sources of information (intense sight/sound). So in order to focus on one, you have to turn down the other. Too loud to hear yourself think otherwise.

the same reason I turn the TV volume up when reading the subtitles of the foreign movie I'm watching - my brain is always confused.

because it is very distracting..I do it when I am driving through a storm as well. being quiet helps the concentration

holy crap!
I really thought I was the only one! I deliver pizzas, and its almost and ocd thing for me now that as soon as I pull on the street I'm delivering to, I mute my radio.

I think I do it, though, to concentrate.
