This is very common with this breed. I know, I have one and my sister works for a breeder in Canada. They do require general maintenance with their eyes, but my concern is that if there is something else wrong or "stuck" there.
Does your dog have longer hair near her/his eyes? Clipping it short makes it much easier to tend to as well as limiting the tearing.
But of course, eye issues should be dealt with promptly if there is a discoloration, if the substance looks like infection or if any serious discomfort to the pet is noticeable.
Eye problems care be very serious so if you have any major concerns, I would contact your local veterinarian.

It could be as simple as an allergy, but also more serious like an upper respiratory infection. Wash hi eye out with plain lukewarm water to make sure to remove any foreign object. If it'll continue, and/or get worse, you need to have him checked out by a vet, as he might be needing antibiotics. Hope the little fellaw gets better soon!

my shuztu had the same thing. There was something wrong with her immune system or something like that, the eye was a side effect. Take her to the vet immediatley because it'll probably only get worse because my dog can't even see out of her eye anymore because we noticed too late.

Mix some Borac acid and water and drip a cotton ball into it and wipe from the corner out. Do this until the mucus is gone and re do it two or three times daily.

Time to see the vet immediately so the poor little guy does not suffer too much or lose his sight in the eye.
I would NOT use human eye drops in his eye. The medication in them is not suitable for animals.

See a veterinarian. Our second pup almost died and we saw the vet many times, he didn't know what to do except medicine. My father in law told us of liquid silver (we bought it at GNC) and the pup stood up and started playing with the rope we bought them. The vet was impressed, we think that our pup wasn't supposed to live :-( He is still with us, although skinnier than his brother, but he is the best jumper ever (he jumps onto our Calif king bed!)

you can use some saline solution to clean it out for now... but if it persists i would call the vet and describe the mucus... the vet might be able to walk you through something else, or you'll have to go in...

he might be a little sick and the stuff in his eye is probably more mucus. if he isn't sick he might be depressed. when i first got my dog she was a little scared to be away from her sisters and had gunk in her eyes but as she got to getting comfortable with us it went away. but we just left it alone and it went away about a week or two later
