they learn tons of stuff working on their merits. They go to summer camp for a week and swim, do archery, rock climbing, etc. They are so proud when they have worked on something and get a patch for it. An Eagle Scout is prestigious and that can be put in one's resume when the child grows up.
Cautions-never allow your child to go anywhere alone with a leader. Scout Leaders are to never be alone with a child, and they have been taught to see the boys in group settings only.

I'm not sure if there is any cautions other than make sure the leaders are all OK.

Boy scouts is a wonderful organisation for young boys. It teaches then a lot of responsibility and its also a lot of fun for them.

We have our 9 year old in it and he loves it.
Teaches them a lot ,and installs a lot of good behaviour and morals.
