Sorry the government track record is abysmal the 2 industries that the government is involved with right now are the only 2 that do not behave like the rest of the economy.

Right now the inflation rate has been between 2-3% college tuition and government health care have been going up at twice the rate of inflation for decades. Those of you that wish for national health care be careful what you wish for! because if their track record is consistant taxes will start out low and then over time explode.

After all when the federal income tax was enacted it started from a low of 1% to a high of 15% by the time we got to the 1980's top bracket was 90%. I question people who put such blind trust in the government to do what they promise.

First, a lot of money would be available if our President did not start illegal wars that cost $10 billion a month.

Do we really need 12 aircraft carrier battle groups? Why not 6 or 8. Why are we spending millions on bases in Europe when Europe is at peace and economically strong?

Stop the insanity of the war on drugs and stop giving millions in foriegn aid that only benefits other nations militaries.

That should be about 70 to 100 billion dollars of seed money to get national health care started. Just don't let the health corporations corrupt the entire thing.

Don't need to raise taxes just re-route some of your current tax money.

Like stop spending so much on wars in the middle east and more on taking care of your own people.

I'm British and couldn't live without Government Heath Care. To me the right to be cared for by a doctor when you are sick is a basic human right, surely? Not a luxury to be bought. I've just had a baby and received excellent antenatal care, and didn't have to worry about paying any "bills" or insurance! All care is provided by the Government.

You Americans are so controlled by big business (Insurance Companies) I pity you! You shouldn't have to pay for basic human rights like the right to be cared for when you're sick! Not in a civillised 21st century country anyway!

Most definitely us, for example the Canadian system of free health care bumps sales taxes up to 10%

Unfortunately with nationalized health care the wait for things like organ donors is extremely long.

Medicare actually pays doctors and hospitals at least as well as most private insurers, and has much lower operating costs. Universal insurance would pay for everybody, and that sounds more expensive, but those costs are passed on to others anyway, and if the uninsured were covered they might get earlier treatment at less expense. It certainly wouldn't be free, but it might be a little less expensive, especially if reasonable limits could be enforced against the outcry of loud minorities.

Living Canada we are highly taxed and that covers medical services. I have a pick of doctors, I have never waited for an appointment. Despite what you hear about our system. Our government if they cannot have procedures done in a timely fashion will pay to allow you to get the required treatment in the US.

Taxes

Of course you raise taxes to pay for universal health care. But you'll pay less in taxes than you would in insurance premiums, and you'll have better health care then most people can afford in the States.

Raising taxes, if it saves you money and gets you better services is a GOOD idea!!

Or...you can put that money in your wallet, pay more for insurance than you would have paid in tax...and get less services. Is THAT the American way??

I would rather pay more taxes than what I pay for insurance now...

THERE IS ALMOST NO WAY POSSIBLE THAT MY TAXES WOULD BE RAISED TO EVEN 50 PERCENT OF WHAT I'M PAYING A MONTH FOR INSURANCE...

so I would be saving quite a bit of money every month... many small businesses would save tons of money not having to provide insurance...

I can't imagine anyone that makes under $100,000 would pay more in taxes than they are paying now for private coverage...

do any of you that oppose it ever actually pay for your own insurance?

a few less bullets, less grenades, less laser guided missiles, a couple less nuclear missiles. there. you have paid for it at least twice.
the only thing wrong with free healthcare in canada is american influence on our politicians and business wanting to undercut it. I wonder why american politicians would back or tolerate this kind of action.
why, they want to destroy our system and put us back where america and others are, that way they won't have anyone yelling at them anymore that they want it too. they might, in a few years, 'suddenly discover' a formula for free health care. that should be worth about a million votes.
