OK we have all heard and probably used the old saying: "It's the thought that counts."
And it really is supposed to be the thought that matters. But when you get a really horrendous gift from someone that should know better - don't you ever think - " i know it's the thought that counts - but just WHAT were they thinking?"
Like this year i got a kleenex box cover that is just gross to me, not my taste and anyone who knows me would know that i would find it tacky. OK i can say it's the thought that counts - but the more i think about it the more i wonder - what the heck they were thinking?
Does anyone else ever feel like this? Am i being awful? Can a person appreciate the gesture of a gift and still be boggled by the actual gift?
Do you have a similar story - please share the story AND your reaction.
Thanks in advance.

oh, yes ! one year i got a subscription to a magazine from an aunt, something to do with knitting and i don't knit but she does all the time....it was weird i thought she meant to order it for herself but accidentally put my name and address on it. the even weirder thing was she would mention them just about every time we talked so i got the message and when that i got them i never looked at them but would send them directly to her. so basically she ordered them for herself and passed them off as a christmas present knowing i didn't want them then wheedled her way into 'suggesting' i forward them to here. good thing she's a really sweet aunt....sweet but manipulative and cheap ! ( good thing she doesn't own a computer and could read this !)

Hopefully they thought enough to give you a reciept and a promise to never do it again.

One year I got a last minute gift of Blue Little House on the Prarie like pajamas from my brother..from the swapmeet. I tried them on and one button fell because they were so cheap. I would have preferred the $10 they cost and a happy holidays wish.

I know it does happen sometimes. Maybe they dont know you well enough or maybe they dont have a "good" taste, I mean maybe they think the wrong way but there is still some kind of love in it. Its ok to feel like that.

It's comments and questions like this that make me consider, THIS is why people hate Christmas so very much.

Well, some people just don't have it. Count yourself lucky you ALWAYS choose the RIGHT gift. Don't you?

My mom gave me a dictionary. It was a nice dictionary, just...a dictionary. And that's all. I was kinda baffled...but I love my mom and she knows how I feel about the language and grammar, so it was actually pretty thoughtful. I smiled.
