The string is just one of the ingredients in creating a sound. The type of guitar and amp are others that make up a total distinct sound. In trying to match the sound of Santana look into these factors also. As a beginner you will need to do lot of experimenting. But for now to get yourself back to playing get some GHS med. light gadge strings. Good string for the price. Buy a set plus a few extra of the B and high E. they tend to break the most. Good Luck!

Always buy D'Addario Guitar Strings. They are the number one selling guitar string in the country as well as the world. You might prefer a lighter gauge like the EXL120 (Starting with a .009) They last a really long time and I have found them to be the most consistent guitar strings available. Almost every store I have ever been to recommends them. You can also buy them in 3 packs to save a little bit of money. Remember to replace them often- you will hear a big difference.

To me, the majority of nickel wound electric guitar string brands sound very similar to each other after the initial bright new-string sound wears off. This is usually after about a week of regular playing. Therefore, all major brands such as Dean Markley, D'Addario, Fender, Epiphone etc. should suit you fine. I usually take advantage of whatever strings are on sale at music stores.

As for gauge, 9's (.09 through.042) are very common, or if you want to build up your finger strength and have a slightly thicker sound, 10's (.010 through .046) are great.

Hi bud........ It is refreshing to see someone take up the guitar and have an idea of what sound they are trying to achieve. Santana uses a fairly heavy gauge of string on his low end. .046 I believe, however Carlos uses very light gauge strings on the G, B and high E string. I think his hi E is as light as .008's. combined with his choice of amps, pick-ups, effects and most importantly his hands he achieves that nice tone. Sometimes I will mix and match my gauges. Heavy on the low end, light on the top end. Currently I am using Ernie Ball's and have been happy abusing the life out them. Remember, it's just not the strings, as much as the sound you are looking for is in your pick-ups, amps and HANDS. Good luck and keep chugging.........

as a beginner, you shouldn't pay too much for strings. you won't really notice the difference. look for the 5-7$ price range. as far as the gauge, i would ask what kind of music are you playing, and also how are your caluses? lighter strings are much easier on your fingers, but you lose some soud quality and they wil break much easier if oyu're into harder stuff. you can't go wrong with mediums, that's what i like, usually fenders. happy playing

Try Ernie Ball brand if you can find them. You won't be disapointed.

I would use Fender strings, they last longer.
