Wouldn't keeping Saddam alive and giving him an opportunity to be involved in the new government make it more official?? I mean the man knows we won't let him take it back over. Why not reason with him. When he realizes that this is in the best interest of his people and it is his last chance to be remembered as a strong leader he may crack. Maybe he could serve as a symbol to his people much as the Royal Family in England. He has great influence and if he backed the new government we could devert furthur killing. Perhaps with Saddam spared and given a role the people will be more excepting. Why are we there?? At this point it is for the best interests of the Iraqis. Giving them what they need and want ultimately gives the US the security it desires. Iraqs new government should serve as a shinning example to its neighbors. Let the Iraqis work out the detail of thier new Democracy.. it is thier country! Allow Saddam to help bring his ppl back together and end the killing!!!

ok for the guys who are telling me to read... ur just ignorent cause I know plenty about it. Fact is he was thier leader. If u really thought about it... he is a symbol of national pride. They don't have much there... he is all they knew. He was able to prevent civil war under his reign. Im not saying he deserves to be let go... I am suggesting that if he endorced the new government we could avoid furthur deaths. The people that have already died are lost... not worth the bloodshed of more people. I am not saying it would deffinately work.. but killing him... we would never really know.
and buddy u move to Iran.. u'd fit right in.. they act just as irrational and angry as u... thier leader lies to them and they don't even know it!

Keeping him alive might have a small effect in appeasing the Sunni fighters, but I fear it would be very small. Perhaps, if he was promised life in prison rather than death, he might be willing to write letters to Sunni leaders and attempt to convince them to halt the killing of Iraqis. But here in the civilized world it is hard to imagine someone so hateful of his own countrymen that he would order them killed simply because they had a different religion.
That would be akin to a Baptist governor of Texas ordering a bunch of Catholics killed because they did not support some idea he expressed. See how radically different it is than here in the US??
I think Saddam should be condemned to a cell, not killed because that way his misery would last much longer. Let him languish in a cell for years and think about the evil he has done to people.
Maybe he could help, but I fear he has no desire to do such.......

ofcourse he shouldnt be hanged saddam was the only thinkg standing in irans way and he kept the countries sects together iraq needs a strong divtator to bring everyone together i love democracy but everyone in the united states has to understand that the people of the middle east arent ready for a democracy they still live the way they did a 500 years ago they need strong rulers too keep them in check look at palestine and lebanon and iraq they arent ready for a democracy saddam is what they need plus he killed a lot of shiites SO WHAT THEY ARE THE BAD GUYS WE CANT ALLOW IRAN AND THE SHIITE TO GAIN POWER SADDAM DID THE RIGHT THING BY KILLING THEM LOOK AT LEBANON AND IRAQ THE SHIITES ARE CAUSING ALOT OF PROBLEMS AND THEY ARE SUPPORTED BY IRAN
IRAQ NEVER HAD THAT MANY SHIITES IN THE COUNTRY IRAN BROUGHT THEM IN TO TAKE CONTROL OF THE COUNTRY AND SADDAM WAS THE ONLY THING STANDING IN IRANS WAY NOW SAUDI ARABIA AND OTHER COUNTRIES HAVE TO SPEND MORE MONEY ON DEFFENSE AGAINST IRAN AND WHATS THIS THING ABOUT PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST? AMERICA HAS A WAR IN THE MIDDLE EAST EVERY 10 YAERS AND THEN THEY TALK ABOUT PEACE WHEN THE AMERICAN GOVERNMENT IS THE ONE BRINGING IN ALL THE WAR!

The Iraq that Saddam lorded over is gone. His concept was of an autocratic Persian, secular state. That is long gone.
What you have now is sectarian conflict, one which Saddam Hussein kept in check by facilitating the domination of Sunni over Shia.
Saddam is useless now. Although his execution could fuel more ethnic warfare as retribution from his former allies. Frankly, they should have shipped him off to an international tribunal abroad while they still had the chance, and I personally think that execution - rather than life-long imprisonment - is a mistake.

He should not be allowed to be involved in a new government AT ALL!!! He should be locked in a cold wet cell and be punished with chinese torture until he dies. I really don't believe that people who have done many horrible things should be given a second chance. Would you give Hitler a second chance??? HELL NO!!

when one of Saddam's brothers left Iraq his wife pleaded with Saddam to get him and have him return to Iraq. She pleaded with Saddam to forgive his brother for leaving and begged for his forgiveness. Saddam agreed to allow her husband (his brother )back to Iraq but when he was delivered to her house he was cut up into pieces. They did not worship Saddam they feared him. It is naive to believe this man can be reasoned with. He is simply unreasonable. Should he be put to death? absolutely he has killed thousands of innocent people, for the crime of having a thought that he did not agree with. Your freedom of speech would not be allowed under his regime. He may have you shot for comparing him to someone in England..Howard

yes he should be put to death, look at all of the people that got killed because of him even some of his own people got killed and keeping him alive he will think that he got away with something so terrible as killing, besides its not up to you or me or usa to decide if he should or shouldnt be hang, the people of iran decides.
