generally speaking, a "free spirit" is someone who does not feel constrained by the social mores of the day, be they socio-economic, political or sexual (or any combination thereof).
it can be safely said that a free spirited person follows their own heart and mind, regardless of what others think. they are generally unfettered by material, social or sexual entanglements that many others feel they must conform to. such a person generally does not set out to hurt another person (as in emotionally, in a relationship, for instance) but if one is so inclined and does not make it obvious and/or warn the other person, who usually is of a different mind altogether, great pain can result. free spirits are often quite easy to spot, however, so this doesn't usually occur (thank goodness!) to be free spirited is to be true to oneself. end of story. hope this helps.

I think birds are most often used to symbolize freedom of spirit. The dove is typically used to denote peace.

You'll see those with a free spirit accept some social norms as well as rejecting others. The pretenders reject *every* social norm just to look like they're free and don't acknowledge the ones they agree with.

a true spirit is not bogged down by

1.)social norms
2.) strict religious doctrine
3.)sterotypes
4.)going with the crowd
5.)thinking inside the box

A free spirit is not really a cut and dry sterotype rather it is a mindset to allow your natural spiritual instinct to lead you rather then being lead by rules, doctrine or set beliefs.
