i have a court yard and there are 2 possums that come and visit, i am quite frightened of them. is there anything i could do to keep them away.

Leave them there. They live in trees. I'm sure they are just as frightened of you.

First, it is true that opossums are mostly harmless animals. I've spent plenty of time around them, and, while I agree that they are creepy, the most harm they're likely to cause is to get run over by your car, etc.
It is also possible to keep them away. There are actually commercial opossum repellants available. Check out http://www.critter-repellent.com/possum/opossum-control.php. There are many similar sites & products.
They have to live somewhere, but if it's causing you a problem, why not excercise your rights as a superior life form, and keep the suckers away!

Wrap the base of the tree with a sheet of tin 3ft up. Higher if possible.

you can call animal control to come and get them....by the way, you don't need to be frightened of them....if you were to actually hit one with a stick..doesn't even have to be hard they will roll over and play dead...they are not aggressive animals.....know if you have chickens that is another story......

Opossums aren't going to hurt you, I have them living my yard. They won't bother you unless you bother them, just let them be.
