I must update my desktop and I'm getting SO confused. Gateway? Dell? Emachines? I assume good things about all of these and then get the horror stories.

So, what brands are actually worth investing in?

I Have gone threw a few computers. I strongly sugest not getting a dell. I have one and yes it works fine, but not good enough for what i paid. compaq and hp are top brands, you can get a fine computer for a reasonable price the more you spend the more you get. I dont know much about how gateway computers are, so i cant fill you in on that. E-machines are more of the off-brand, you can get them for a nice price and they run good but they are of the cheaper sorts, I would sugest getting one of them if you are on a tight budget. Now last but not least i have a desktop (dell) and a laptop (compaq) and i have to say that the ease of having my laptop anywhere is such a benifite that you might consider haveing a laptop instead. i bought this one for 1200 two years ago, you can pick it up now at walmart for 700 and it comes with some more featers then what i got. laptops are very nice to have.

I myself would steer far from manufactured PC's - Personally I'd take a computer course to learn how to build your own PC or simply research it on the net. Building your own is very simple, you save yourself a ton of money in the end and also when it is time to upgrade you can update a couple parts and you are back in business. If this sounds to complicated for you which would be intimidating to many I would go with Dell. You can always browse Ebay.com where people build custom PC's which contain better parts and would be sold at a cheaper price. However, you won't get the manufacture warranty and that may be important to you. I would stay clear of Emachines - They are cheap, use poor quality parts and I've seen them returned more than any manufactured PC. Compaq makes a decent mid quality system but they design the structure inside to make upgrades a real hassle - I've seen great things out of Dell PC's and your very best would be Alienware PC's - Hope this helps

If I were to purchase a desktop I would go with Dell because of their high customization ability which makes up for their high cost. However, I don't purchase desktops because I find it more cost productive to buy each part separately (cpu, motherboard, hard drive, etc.) and put it all together myself. You get the high customization that Dell offers plus the low cost of buying only what you want. Check out the websites listed in the sources for desktop components. I greatly recommend this if you are mechanically inclined. If, however, you don't feel comfortable doing this, go with Dell.

I like Dell, I still own a Dell Optiplex machine manufactured in 1997 and the thing hasn't broken down once. Now that's durability.
