Hieroglyphs have not been in use since Pharonic times.Arabic is the soken and written language today
Their meaning was considered long lost, until the finding of The Rosetta Stone.
Comparison of the 3 languages Greek, Egyptian Hieroglyphs and Demotic script, allowed a French Egyptologist/linguist named Champollion to prove it was an actual written language.
It was written in most cases from right to left with the symbols facing the beginning of the row.Scribes were expected to have a knowledge of at least 800 glyphs.
There are at least 3000 now identified from the 3500yrs that hieroglyphic writing was in use.
Literal translation is made difficult as there are no vowels in the written hieroglyphic language. Egyptologist have to make an educated guess as to the correct pronunciation of words.
It was only a reflection of the spoken language of the time.

No, they use Arabic writing now as the official written language. Arabic has been used in the country since the 7th century A.D. The last known inscription was written in 391 A.D. with very few at the time being able to read hieroglyphic language.

Well, it is still used to today. Not as common as it was amongst the ancient Egyptians, but some people enjoy learning and writing hieroglyphs.

They don't write in hieroglyphics anymore (except maybe some scholars or people interesting in ancient egypt) but some Coptics still speak the language they spoke in ancient egypt! Now talk about a long lived language.
