We just got our hamster yesterday. She is taking bedding and food up the tube to her exercise ball, which is attached to the cage. When she exercises, the bedding and food fly out of the cracks and makes a mess! Plus, I don't know if she is exercising the way she should be with it full of this stuff. How can I keep her from doing this without upsetting her?

Either she insists on a new crib, or she wants to take her stuff on the run.

My hamster did the same exact thing! It was really annoying, but fortunately my hamster didn't run in the ball, instead he'd run around like a lunatic on the bottom, hit the food bowl, fall over, and pop back up and do it all over again. Hamsters are funny little creatures...you might want to look into a new cage because I kept a cage just like that for a year, and it was hard to keep the little ball clean I had to clean it everyday because my hamster used the bathroom a lot in it and it would fall through the cracks and make a mess. Since you just got it though, you chould consider making it a travel cage or "vacation" cage like my friend does.

Many years ago I had hamsters. They are amusing critters and fun to have. I found that they will take their bedding and food just about anywhere. However, I also think that you may need to let the little critter have some privacy for 2-3 days for it to settle down and find a quiet place to store it's food and place it's bedding. They can be anxious in a new environment.

This my friend is perfectly normal i had a hamster once the ball attached she would use to sleep and run in. there really is no way to keep her from doing this my suggestion would be to get a different cage. if the whole cage is plastic she will chew it up anyway or at least mine chewed a huge hole in his . get one of the round the house exercise balls and a wheel that goes in the cage

I'm not for sure but if you go to your local pets mart or pet store you can find a book that can help you or ask someone who works there. The only advise i can give you is find a card or something slim that can fit in between the ball and cage that you can slide in there every time you see her taking bedding towards the ball.

Make or buy her some kind of little "house". She needs an inclosure inside her habitat that she can nest in. If you provide something of that sort then she will more than likely use that instead of her exercise ball. Good luck! PS. You can buy little wooden houses at the pet store, these are best, as she can also chew on it if she wants to.

Yes, this is normal for your hamster to taking bedding everywhere and to hide food. This is just what hamsters do. You won't be able to keep her from doing this. Just keep her cage clean, make sure she has food, and plenty of water.

my hamster does this too! but i'm glad he stopped using it for exercise.
i bought it a seperate wheel that i put on the bottom of the cage and he just sleeps upstairs in the exercise ball.
hamsters are pretty weird... my friend's hamster does the same thing. you can remove the bedding until she gets the hint that it's meant just for exercise. maybe you should get her a house/shelter thing and try to get her to get used to that.

It is normal. Put something else in there that she can stuff her bedding into, like a toilet paper roll (without tp of course), or something like that. I used to have hamsters too, and mine always did that.

She decided to make that her sleeping spot. Just clean it out and buy her a hamster igloo for a new sleeping spot. She wont get mad.

Yes it is perfectly normal. She probably decided that is were she is comfortable. some animals get nervous and find one place were they feel safe and tend to stick with it. When i first got my mice. they would bring their food to their snug cup, this behavior may change after he is comfortable in his surroundings.
