well... from an envolutionary standpoint*... you could have a bird that is not QUITE a chicken lay an egg that would hatch to become what we know as a chicken... so then, the egg came first, eh? but, of course, an egg IS a chicken (if it's been fertilized, that is) but just in a different form... so it doesn't really matter.
*yeah, I know that this isn't actually consistent with evolutionary theory (because species is such a lose definition, it's impossible to tell when something changes from one species to another, and it usally doesn't happen in one generation, etc, etc.)... it's just a joke..

egg, because egg laying animals (such as dinos) were around before birds.
btw, this is a good joke to pull in the grocery store. you buy some eggs and some chicken. you put the eggs on the conveyer belt and then the chicken. When the cashier scans the eggs, you say "Look, the egg came before the chicken!" This always causes a lot of a laughter from everyone around.

If you believe in the creation story then the chicken came first as it didn't say anything about eggs but the chicken does lay those suckers.

I believe the chicken came first because God might have created it to lay many eggs, and so on.

Eggs came much earlier than the hen
Eggs were also laid by dinosors
so hens came much later
So EGG came first
