When taking a 5 week old baby's temp do you add a degree for underarm and minus a degree for rectal? How high should my baby's temp be before I worry and call the doctor? She keeps spitting up tonight, alot. Every few minutes but her rectal temp was 99.2 a few minutes ago. Is that a normal temp?

The temp answer was covered well so I'll answer the secondary spit up question. TOTALLY normal. Just coming up from a little deeper but as long as it's spit up its okay. You only need to worry about projectile vomiting. Trust me you will no the difference!
Good luck and try not to worry to much. If in doubt call your peditirican, even at night, it's what they are for, they are used to it and it may just put your mind at ease.

In a baby under three months, anything over 100.6 rectally should be reported to the pediatrician. I've never been told to subtract anything for it being a rectal reading.
Sour smelling spit-up is common, as the milk has curdled. If it's not projectile vomit, don't worry too much.

99.2 is normal rectal temp. 98.6 is normal oral, and you are correct about the difference in oral, rectal, and axillary. 99.6 is normal for rectal, and 97.6 is normal for axillary. Spitting up alot is normal for babies. She could have air bubbles on her tummy. Make sure that you burp her well after each feeding. If she gets alot of gas on her tummy (which will cause spit up too) try the infants Mylicon drops. They work wonders. Hope that this helps.

Add a degree for underarm, subtract from rectal. Sounds like she has a normal temp. to me.

It's normal for now but keep checking. She probably has gas and it's making her spit up. If it starts to come flying out instead of pouring or dribbling I would call the Dr. because that would be projectile vomiting which can be serious in infants.

Any temp over 100 should be watched. Call the doctor if the temp over 103 or higher! If it gets to high infection could set in and cause serious health issues.

For a baby this young any temp is a reason to call the doc. Just tell the doc the temperature and how you took it, he will do the calculation. check your baby out for other symptoms and make the call if you are worried.
It is the doc's job to help you take care of the baby.

thats just fine.. remember that babies temps run higher than ours generally. Call your doctor if you have genuine concerns.. but thats not high enough to cause concern yet. Monitor the vomiting and make sure shes getting enough fluids
