Depends on each individual store. In the stores ive been too, generally the petsmart fish were better cared for. But like i said it depends, you need to go to both in your area and compare. Look for bettas kept in clean water, healthy vibrant colors, activeness, full fins. Avoid fish kept in dirty water, tattered fins, fluffy tufts of fungus on the bodies, gold dusting on the bodies (disease called velvet), avoid those that are not active and look blah. Use your common sense. Do not buy a fish to "save it". If you buy sick fish, more fish will be brought in to replace those you saved. Its a never ending cyle. If you see mistreated animals, bring it to attention of the head offices and the local manager to show them that they will lose business and money if they continue to treat the animals poorly. Dont be afraid to speak up, just be polite about it so it gets heard. More people need to speak up, they arnt just fish afterall. They feel pain, they do have brains and memories and learn to recognize their caregivers.

It really depends on the store, and how quickly the betta are sold off. If been in petsmart stores within 6 miles of each other that were very different in fish care. If all dependent the store management. Just look at the betta. Is it active? Does it have good fins? (No fraying at the ends. No missing parts of fin.) Put your finger gently against the jar. (no tapping) It should either swim over to check it out (sign of an aggressive betta), or run away (sign of a shy betta). If he flares it's a good sign of health, but a sign he's very aggressive. (Aggression is only bad if you want to have non betta tankmatesin a small tank. Betta tankmates just won't work.)

it really does depend on the individual store, but from what I've found and what others have said here, petsmart. while everyone has disagreed with me petsmart doesn't have "funky blue water" it's actually treated as a preventative measure. this helps ensure the bettas have a better chance at not getting sick while being kept in the tiny cups. I've never seen any other stores bother to put meds in their cups.

I bought ours at Wallmart, it was the best fish ever!! He would eat out of my hand when I put his food close to the water (he would actually jump out of the water!) He was blue. I'm not sure the life expectancy of these fish, we never researched it, but he is not with us any more :-( He is in fish heaven now, swimming with all of his friends LOL
