Yes boric acid works great in getting rid of roaches. You just sprinkle it along the baseboards and anywhere they like to go. They get it on themselves and track it back to their nests and when they clean themselves it gives them chemical burns in their mouth parts and then they cannot eat and starve to death. it can take up to one month to completely get rid of them with reapplication occasionally and they cannot build up any kind of resistance to it.

Boric acid is safe to use if you have pets or small children. If ingested in small quantities it is just as safe/dangerous as table salt.

You can get it at your local drugstore as it has medicinal uses as well.

I don't remember what kind of acid I was told about, but I got into a discussion with a friend of mine who had cockroaches and she said that she used powdered sugar and acid(again, not sure which kind of acid) to get rid of them. She said that it worked well.
I'll do some research and see if I can find out where to get some boric acid then edit this answer if I find anything.

Okay I looked around online and it seems like it works.
I read that boric acid and any pesticides are harmful to the human nervous system, so I would be careful if I were you--especially if you have children. I couldn't find where to get boric acid but I think you should try at places like Home Depot, Lowe's, etc.

Yes, boric acid is an effective pest control agent. You can find it in the laundry detergent aisle of some of the larger grocery stores and even some hardware stores. The hardest part, though is getting the acid to the bugs. Roaches often live inside walls, under cabinets, under ovens, and other hard to reach places. Also, if you are in an apartment building, the whole building must be treated, otherwise, the roaches just move to an adjacent unit.

I have successfully used boric acid against termites when they were swarming and trying to establish a colony in my house. I have no idea if it would have worked as well against an established infestation.

Gel Bait is supposed to work best. They do sell the boric acid kind too though. I've seen it at Walmart in a container that looks like a big mustard bottle.

most detergents have boric acid in them. I generally will place some detergent around house area (outside) and this works well for the Texas size cockroaches. However have to redo when it rains. (also remember the detergent Borax, i think it got its name for the boric acid in it.)

Boric acid, it is very effective when used properly for killing cockroaches and most other insects. You can also get a house lizard, they are natural enemies and will eat them. More information at http://tinyurl.com/ofxkk

I would say yes. I use it and from what I've read it's much less of a hazard than other pesticides. I've generally found it for around $2/pound in stores like Dollar General or Fred's. To me that is cheap. I don't know whether such stores exist around your area, but this info is a start.

It kills them if they eat it; but it certainly doesn't repel them. I think it's a better choice for garages and other areas where the roach food pickings are slim. It certainly is low-tox and Roach-prufe is relatively cheap
