I always wash mine in cold water and bleach. Hot water disepates the chlorine so it is not as effective.

You can also use this home remedy:
Place white eggshells in an old nylon. Wash the eggshells with your whites. You won't believe how white they get. You can also add whitex to your load. Buy this anywhere you can buy Tintex dye. You can also buy what's called bluing agent. It's quite blue to look at but it'll do the trick... Eggshells are much cheaper and work wonders. I always use this method. My mom taught me. She was a nurse and her uniforms were the whitest ones I've ever seen, even after wearing them for years.
And if you really want them whiter, don't hang them in the sun but instead, lay them on the grass. When the top side is dry, turn them over.
Anything that has lycra, spandex, elastic in the material will yellow if you use bleach....

Just a little note of warning.......synthetic fabrics are actually dyed white, so bleach can actually remove the white over time, and at the very least dull it, so bleach is really only suitable for pure cotton or linen, always use oxygen bleach not chlorine bleach this helps.........
Hanging your washing to dry in the sunlight is still one of the best ways to keep whites white, the dryer will dull it quicker than just about anything else.....

Don't use bleach unless it's something that's all cotton and is totally nastily stained or dirty that you will throw away if the dirt or stain doesn't come out. Reason: Bleach is very hard on fabric.
As other shrewd answerers have said, keep your colors separated: Only wash whites with other whites.
Segregation is a good thing when it comes to laundry.

Make sure there is only whites in the washer. Use cold water, laundry detergent and baking soda. Just dump some in you don't have to worry about using too much. Whites come out great.

Sort your clothes out into these...
-WHITES...anything that is white
-COLORS...anything dark
-DELICATES...handwashing, wool, etc
Just wash the whites by themselves, pour in a little bleach with your regular detergent and condition with fabric softer.
