I need to get a sheet that is 40+" by 24" by 1+" thick for a riverboard project.

Foam is not cheap, sorry. I work in the upholstery industry, and we sometimes use closed-cell foam for marine projects. This type of foam is, unfortunately, very pricey. Although my company typically uses this in 1/4" thickness, what you're looking for would probably cost about $15 - $20 for the size you quoted, perhaps more if your vendor has to special-order the foam.

You may check to see if your city has a yahoo group call cheapcycle or freecycle. Below are the links to the main chapters and can go from there to find your local one. Also you may check places like eBay. They have just about everything on there.
