I named my horses in this way.

The paint filly - because I wanted an authentic Native American name I searched the web for names and their meanings. She is predominantly white with chestnut. A very big surprise from her dark bay momma. So her name became Peta, which means golden eagle. It was a little awkward for a day but then it really came to fit her very well as she is extremely beautiful and just looks like a Peta. Has nothing to do with the animal rights organization, but I didn't mind that association either.
My childhood pony was a gelding shetland pony that was dappled grey. His name was Prince.
I had a palomino mare named Proxy.
A sorrel mare named Ellie
A TB gelding named Buster
I knew a cute horse that was named Snickers, I liked his name.
Good luck.

What breed of horse? What is its personality? How old is it? Is it real or imaginary?

If the horse is real then watch it for special traits that would bring a name to mind naturally. If it is imaginary, or made up for a story you are writing, then think of the specifics that make up this horse.

Names often vary with the different breeds and what they are used for.

Will you be riding for fun or show? Will you be doing tricks or competeing in playdays?

Naming an animal is sometimes as complicated as naming a person.

Give yourself time and a name will come to you.

I have a gelding who is twenty one now and his name is special for showing, but at home I call him Boo.

So think long and hard, but don't strain your brain for a name. It will come naturally and easily if you just don't work on it too hard.

Good luck.

It really depends on the personality/color/build of the horse. Think of an adjective to describe the horse, and build a name around that word. Also, look at the bloodlines and see if there's a worthy ancestor to use part of his/her name in your horse's name. For example: your horse's Grandfather's name is Stars and Stripes. Your horse's color is a blue roan. A good name for your horse might be: "Independence".

I used to be a mounted patrol cop. We had a horse named Feather, who was killed in the line of duty when he was struck by a drunk driver. Feather and his rider were in a park talking to some little kids and their teacher while they were having a picnic. The drunk that killed Feather would have hit all those children had Feather not been standing there. All four of his legs were broken, but he kept trying to get up and we had to hold his head down to keep him from causing himself more pain. We buried him in the park he loved to patrol. So many little lives were saved that day. Feather is a great, majestic name for a great horse. Other names in our barn were Secret, Final Judgment, Max, Stoney, Dancer, Digger Down, Magic and Town - to name a few of my favorites. Good luck with your horse.

You need to be asking a 12-year old girl, like my daughter. She could come up with a zillion. Here are some of her stuffed animals' names: Conquer, Butternut, Spirit, Diablo, Belle, Jasmine, Star, Chazz, Jake, Maximillion, Lightning, Majesty and Chaucer. Good luck!
