To get someone's attention before you start typing. Makes life easier when you know someone is there to receive your message.

The "point" of a nudge is the same thing as a bump on a message board or typing *poke* in a chatroom. It brings the conversation to the attention of others. In the case of MSN, it's specifically a command through the MSN protocol to flash the window. Other implementations of the MSN protocol like Gaim and Trillian may or may not have this feature or may have a different built-in feature of a similar kind.

Ebuddy.com does support it, and only on MSN.
