Cover Your Butt--say nothing that could leaked to management. Contact your AFL-Cio Rep in order to get the path to unionization without getting fired. The sacrifice you may make in order to get you store unionized goes futher than your own self interests. Wal-mart is one of the worst labor nightmares that exists today. When they built a Wal-Mart in my neighborhood, the first thing I saw was a fence built around the entire parking lot--to keep picketeers out, then they had all scab labor build the building even though my city has prevailing wage laws. No one should ever have to shop at Wal-Mart under their current labor policies.

You need to do some research before you select a union. I was an organizer for many years for a small union that was not AFL-CIO... It was a skilled trades union. Unions are the best way to go, but you need to make sure they truly represent you and don't have a good old boy mentality. Companies don't offer benefits and wages because they want to, it's the pressure of the union that forces it to pay up even in non union companies. So in retrospect all unions are a good thing... If you are going to join a union, stay involved and voice your opininion often... If you have to, run campaigns to bring democracy back into your union. After 35 years of trying to bring real democracy to the Machinist Union, we finally threw them out and got a union that was more responsive to the memberships demands.. The retail clerks union would be who to contact first, but be aware that even though the law gives you the right to organize, you have to do it on your own time and even thenyour managers will harrass you..

unfortunately, there is not one that I know of, as Wal Mart indeed opposes unions. many employees who have attempted to start unions have been fired once management heard about it. managers have a Union Tool Kit that tells them to look out for red flags that coworkers may be starting a union. maybe you like your job, but Wal Mart has many unethical, illegal work policies, not just limited to union opposition. Wal Mart treats its employees like sh-t and even uses child labor (sweatshops) to expand their profits. I worked at Wal Mart as a cashier for six weeks and have been boycotting it loyally since my termination (though I was not terminated for attempting to start a union).

you'll be in the unemployemnt line if you do, the rumor you hear about walmart getting rid of those who try and bring in a union is fact. if you value your job and want to continue to work there back off, and gain advancement through hard work, brown nosing , etc. as the Walton family hates unions

If managed right a union can be a great advantage to the worker but is a disadvantage to your employers profits.
