Seems if you're American everyone expects you to talk the same as all other Americans. If you're a voice actor you can get away and they accept you , but if you're just an American with an accent cause your parents are from another cuntry and you grew up with their language, then you are seeing as odd.

Also, Americans seem to be afraid of putting on unusual accents...why? Is it just social pressure? By this i mean, you never see a person in a company put on a fake "APu" voice ( Apu from the simpsons). You can make it not funny and be serious with it, so what's wrong with that.

I would generally say no. besides, it depends on the American. besides we all have accents. those from different parts of our country have different accents, so it is part and parcel plus we have a diverse culture anyway... the point is most americans are fine with accents per se. However, some are seen more positively then others.

I don't think that it's being afraid, it just sounds funny to us. Also the grammar is usually comical as well, i.e., words in funny places in sentences. I worked with people from India and they would say things like "do the needful" or "the report is telling". So it is the accent and the combined sentence structure that is comical, not frightening.

If an American imitated an "Apu" voice, that would be seen as racist in this politically correct society. So no one wants to lose their job by imitating a foreigner, so they don't.

I think the answer is no. People are not afraid of accents.

Some accents can be very difficult to understand and many people hate to ask the person to keep repeating what they just tried to say.

The longer you are around a person with an accent the easier it becomes to understand and the more comfortable people are around you.

Americans spend a lot of time trying to be politically correct. Generally if someone is immitating a foreign accent it is viewed as an attempt to poke fun at people who speak with that accent.

I love real accents ... fake accents are not cool nor funny. As far a putting on a fake Apu accent at work .... that could be considered offensive to some.

I think Americans love accents..I think its can be pretty hot. Americans dont have a problem with accents, they have a problem with if they cant understand whats being said. We want things fast and it takes time sometimes to understand someone else's accent.

I love accents. The only thing I don't like is sometimes it's hard to understand what is being said, and I hate having to ask them to repeat themselves. But give me a good English or Scottish accent and I'm thrilled.

I'm not afraid of accents. I just hate them. I don't hate the people who speak the accents though.

If you put on an "Apu" accent(which I HAVE seen b/c one of my substitute teachers talked almost exactly like apu), you will offend SOME1.

I love accents! I love the way some Middle Eastern men speak. I love Italian men accents too, and some British and Australian accents. French is ok, too choppy, and Chinese is like, huh? But Listening to different people talk the way they do, I like it.
