cut out a bunch of red , pink, and white hearts and write sweet sentiments on them, conversation starters, questions or valentines quotes- sprinkle them on your table, face down around a pretty valentines inspired centerpiece- prepare or pick up and serve a really special dinner - while you are having dinner pick a heart and read it, let it inspire conversation- it can be fun, funny, serious, sentimental, sexy- you may wind up talking about one heart throughout the whole dinner, you might pick up several- it is okay if you don't get to some or even most of them - after dinner, instead of a movie you can pick more hearts or go for a walk. One of my favorite dates with my hubby was going to a playground, sitting on the swings and talking late in the evening .
As for the kitten, find a place in the house to contain it- cut out little paw prints with hearts on them or pink, red and / or white pawprints- start at the door and have him follow them to various places wit hdifferent 'clues' for example from the door to the kitchen where there is a kitty bowl, then from there to the hall where he will find a little collar, then from there to another spot where you might have a kitty toy, or whatever until finally it leads up to an airholed box or room where you have hidden the kitty (don't let the prints lead to a litterbox, lol, let him get that himself or if you get it just give it to him seperately!)
PS - make sure he is ready for a new cat b4 getting him a new one- how long did he have the last one? I am supposing by Feb he should be ready

Ooh, I know!
1.If it's rather warm climate, then go out for a picnic.
2.Play him a love song, or one that is "your couple" song on the guitar. If you don't know it, learn it.
3.Go to a lake, and rent a canoe. Then have a romantic dinner in the middle of the lake, and watch the sunset and the night fall.
4.Give him a scrapbook of you two, or else a cd of songs that remind you of him.
5. I love the kitten idea! That's so cute! I'd do that, but my boyfriend has nine shih tzus...=(
6.At your house, you could make him a delicious valentines feast and play romantic music, and dance, and watch movies.
7. If it is snowy, you can go outside and go sledding, followed by a snowball fight. Then, go back inside and drink hot cocoa and watch movies while snuggling. Perfect winter idea!
8. www.lovingyou.com has some great ideas! Have fun going through them all!

Rent a limo, get all dressed up and head to your fave restaurant. A romantic carriage ride is also a great idea (if you are near one).
Go to a local florist and get some rose petals, make a trail to the bed room and cover the bed with petals (put the kitten in a box with a big red bow in the middle of the bed, light some candles and put on some romantic tunes, get a bottle of champagne, a let your hearts lead the rest of the night.

If you’re in some mood for a peachy tango or a soulful waltz with your significant other, pack your worries behind because here’s one of the grooviest ideas for Valentine’s Day celebrations. Just organize a Valentine’s Day dance for yourself. It isn’t too hard to arrange one. Just keep some soft numbers handy and some romantic recipes ready because you never know when you might grow your appetite ! And it’s also one of the winning ideas to invite couples over to your dance party and add a zing to the entire Valentine’s Day blowout with a few interesting love games like ‘Find Your Partner’, ‘Pin The Heart On Cupid’ or ‘Pass The Heart’. In case you don’t entertain the idea of initiating a celebration party yourself, you can simply plug in to one of the many Valentine’s Day dance parties that are held everywhere on February 14. Come Valentine’s Day, there’s no dearth of special Valentine’s Day dances. So just groove in.

Ok do not give him a cat. Trust me pets make lousy gifts. you could get him a gift certificate for the local shelter and let him pick out his own when hes ready. but showing up with a ball of fur you like may not be his new favorite thing like you want it to be and what if you break up? Weird having a pet an ex gave you. As for the stay at home thing- cute idea.. me and my husband were pretty broke one year so I made hamburgers in the shape of hearts for dinner and gave him 2 cards, one gushy and romantic, the other flirty, and he really appreciated the cute gesture. Rent a couple romantic comedies your guy might also like, and even if they suck, oh well at least you can do lots of couch cuddling. ;) Going out is over rated, we went out last year and every restaurant we went to had at least a 30-60 minute wait. good luck and happy v-day!

Go out for dinner.
And later after dinner (since you said he recently lost his cat) tell him to close his eyes and bring out a kitten with a big bow around its neck.
Have fun!

2. Get a couples massage.
3. Take a walk on a beach (if you are near one).
