My desktop is running XP. My laptop is running XP pro. I have residential DSL, and a D-Link DI-614+ wireless router. The configuration is the DSL feed comes from the wall to the DSL modem, then to the router. The router is hard-cabled to the desktop and wirelessly linked to the laptop. I am able to access the DSL internet connection on my laptop successfully. In addition, I am able to access corporate resources through the wireless network and my VPN client on the laptop. I am wondering if the problem has to do with one or more of the following: router settings, advanced network settings on one or both computers, method of setting up the "home network" (such as the initial choice of configuration on the network setup wizard)...or, even if I actually have a home network set-up, workgroup configuration/naming. Please advise. Thanks.

you can not workgroup connect using XP pro, it is strickly a domain networking software. This makes it not possible to network a XP Home and XP Pro computer.

You have to add a home network to both computers and then share your printer from the desktop. Once you have done that, then you have to find the printer on the home network and add it to your list of printers and maybe set it as the default. But, if you have a wireless printer, you don't have to go through all that.

The problem might be that you have VPN client on your laptop. Some VPN clients route ALL traffic back to the other end of the VPN (in your case, your corporate network). This traffic then cannot find its way back to your local network.

If you can, disable your VPN client and see if you print then.

It probably has nothing to do with being wireless. Just to be sure, move the laptop next to the router and use a wired connection and see if anything changes.

You must enable the printer to be shared.

The following is for the desktop with the printer:
Start>Control Panel>Printers and Faxes (i think)>Right click on printer>Properties>Sharing>type a name for the printer in the Shared as box. (the name should be short, simple, and one word).

The Following is for the laptop:
Make sure the laptop is in the same workgroup as the desktop is. After that, goto My Network Places>on the side pane, click on the Show Workgroup computers> then click on your desktop computer>click on Printers and Faxes>then double click on the printer. After you do this a box should pop up and ask you to install it. Click yes. After that, you can remotely print.

You need to set up printer sharing on the desktop. Make sure that both the desktop and laptop are setup using the same workgroup name.

Do you have the printer drivers for the printer installed on your laptop?
Also, you have to set to allow file and printer sharing on desktop.
