Do NOT go to the hospital, unless you want to be there for many hours longer than you need to be. This is not an emergency. Stay calm. It's part of a normal process.
Call your healthcare provider, to let them know. They will want to know if it is clear fluid, if the baby is moving, if you are having any contractions, and if you have a history of Group B Strep infection. You may have been tested for this at 36 weeks.
Most women begin labor within 12 hours after the water breaks. Almost all are in labor within 24 hours.
The risk of infection increases after 24 hours. For this reason many doctors and midwives will want to induce labor after 12 hours if you haven't started on your own, just to get you started and speed things up.
Also antibiotics can be given in labor to prevent infection.

When your water breaks it's a sign of labour. Every woman is different, it was about a hour after when the real contractions started. Call the triage at the hospital and see what they say, they'll tell you how far apart your contractions should be before you go to the hospital.

go to the hospital...
a baby should be delivered within 24 hours of your water breaking to avoid risk of infection.
My water tore at 38 weeks and I had a slow leak and was only dilated to a 2 with NO CONTRACTIONS. I went to the hospital and stayed there until my son was born. Good luck to you

If you water breaks you need to go to the hospital right away. Do not wait for contractions to begin. Labor may have to be induced depending on how far along you are. You see, the amniotic sac provides protection from the outside world from contaminating the fetus. Your doctor may want to induce you with a drug called pitocin and perhaps he may even want you to have i.v. antibiotics.I will have to tell you that labor induction brings the baby sooner, but it is more painful. The contractions are harder and faster. DO NOT WAIT!!!! If your water broke ,head out to the hospital,RIGHT AWAY!!!

hmmm- interesting answers here. What I was told with my 3 kids (and read in books) that if your water breaks, you call your doctor to let them know. They will then instruct you on timing your contractions. If they're light, they'll have you wait. If they become 'bothersome' they'll have you come in. Every doctor is different, but I've never heard of one saying to come to the hospital right when it breaks.
BUT if it's not clear, YES, you need to go because that means your baby has pooped (macomium) sp? (first poop) and can be dangerous if he/she swallows it.
So- if your water just broke (and that's why you're asking) call your doctor. Doesn't matter what time, they're on call 24/7. If you are just wondering, and are just close to your due date and nervous, then ask your doctor at your next visit. Really it's not a big deal when it breaks- you hear stories of a huge gush while shopping- sure it could happen. Mine had to be cut because they never broke. (had 3 c-sections)
Good luck though! It's always a memorable time!

If during office hours call your doctor, if after hours go to the hospital, unless it is green instead of clear there is no rush but don't wait for contractions just take your time going instead of rushing. Unless contractions start coming and quickly then rush.

Go to the hospital but no need to rush. My water broke with my first child. I called the hospital, took a shower, made a few phone calls and was on my way. The baby came 22 hours later, no c-section needed and the baby was perfectly fine.

once you're in water, taking a bath or bath you received't understand good at the same time as your water breaks. yet once you get out you'll. that's going to proceed to leak and spill out til the toddler comes. you may bleed somewhat bit too, and could experience contractions drawing near. i does not difficulty about it. you'll understand no matter if it occurs interior the bathe you'll be able to inform after. i does not bypass swimming. it ought to reason an infection if you're dialating. medical doctors in many circumstances dont recommend that. also, once you get your membranes stripped do a lot of walking. Stripping membranes dont continually artwork. they'd ought to do it back at a destiny appt. If the toddler isn't waiting the toddler wont come. yet walking facilitates, a lot of walking. you may also try raspberry leaf tea. Dont try castor oil, it dont continually artwork and it can make the toddler have a bowel move in utero. good success.

Go to the hospital for many reasons, not to freak you out but,
you could have a prolapsed cord that you can not tell. Which is when the cord is coming out of you first and gets pinched off so your baby is not getting oxygen. And once your water breaks you are open to infection so get to the hospital and have that baby, good luck to you. Sorry I didn't mean to freak you out, I would rather be safe than sorry.
