they only use the possesion arrow in h.s. and college because a jump ball is a play where a lot of players get hurt, spaining ankles, etc...A jump ball is a much fairer call for a tie up.

possesion arrows are used to prevent injury in younger players as well as to speed up the game. If you had to take a slow played HS or College game and line everyone up for a jump ball and then toss it every time, it would get old fast.

In the pros the longer that the game goes on the more money the league makes, Jump balls slow the tempo and the game that much more, besides the NBA players dont have as much to lose if they roll an ankle on a jump ball because they have already made it in the pros. the kids in college or HS getting a sprained ankle can be the one setback that makes them miss out on either College ball or getting drafted. its too much of a risk.

and most hs refs (at least here in california) cant throw the ball fairly anyways, they get lucky on the opening tip, they cant be expected to throw a fair jump ball everytime someone gets tied up.

the possession arrows were just recently integrated to the college game. jump balls were the original rule. possession arrows reward teams with hustle and defense because they would get a good chance at gaining a possession just by tying up the ball with an opponent - sort of a half-steal :)

I think the jump ball is pretty fair.
and I don't know what you are talking about in possession arrows.

Because having possesion arrows is only used in amateur leagues, the nba has it's rights as a professional league to have it's own set of rules aside from the 13 basic rules which should be followed wether it would be pro or amatuer basketball... now you know. plus it's way more fair.
