Yes, that was rude. If you didn't want the person's help, then all you had to say was, "no thank you, I'm just looking" and they would get the hint. To answer the rest of your question, stores do that because it's called customer service. The store you are at wants to acknowledge you as a valued customer. For that reason, by asking you for help is a way of saying, "hey, I'm here for whatever you need." If you've ever worked in customer service (which I'm guessing you haven't), you would know that the number one complaint is the customer felt ignored or not attended to.
My advice to you would be to get a customer service job, so that you can learn what it feels like to be treated by dirty, by someone like you. Sorry if that harsh, but what you did was wrong and unnecessary.

Yes, I consider that rude. You could have used a little more tact. The reason they "bother" you while you're browsing is because they want to help you. It is also what they get paid to do. I'm guessing you never worked at a job like that, but I can tell you that one reason it has such a high turn over rate is because employees get tired of being treated disrespectfully. Next time, try saying "No thanks, I'm just browsing," and they'll probably leave you alone.

It was a little rude. Be thankful there was someone there to ask did you need help. Most of the time they are ganged up gossiping and when you need help they act as if you are a bother. Next time just say "Thank you, right now I'm only browsing, if I need help I'll let you know."

I've worked in retail before. Usually they are trained to ask the patrons at least once if they need any assistance. It really shouldn't continue to be a problem unless they get their pay by commission, or they are just bored and want something to do. It's not really their fault, it's just store policy to offer assistance at least once. The person was just trying to do their job. Just tell them (politely) that you are fine, and browsing. IF they persist, then tell them to go away.

That was very rude of you. You should have just told them that you were just looking and didn't need any help at that time. You have to put yourself in their shoes. With retail jobs thats what the associates have to do. I'm sure they don't like going up to people, while they're shopping, asking if they need any assistance but thats what they have to do. I don't mean to be rude but learn some manners.

Yeah I have done the same. You look to them if you need help otherwise let me shop right? Another one I hate is when ur at a restaurant and ur eating and the people keep coming and saying "everything alright"? Man if i had a problem they'd hear about it! Like let me eat???!!.. :o)

yes it was rude/ that "store peep" is required to ask you if you need help, i worked in retail and if i didnt ask a customer that was within talking range if they needed assistance and a supervisor was anywhere near me and noticed it, i would get written up.
try being nice and say no thank you im fine

Yeah, that was kind of rude. It's their job to ask if you need help. You can simply say "No, thank you." If they THEN keep following you around, you might need to tell them to leave you alone, but usually they go away as soon as you let them know you don't need help. Using manners can never hurt.

Maybe telling him 'go away' was a little rude. I just tell them 'I'm browsing, thank you' and they leave me alone. If he kept hounding you after that then I'd tell him to 'go get stuffed' and leave.

The fact that you write "peeps" for people makes me think youre proabably a suspicious looking gang wannabe. I'd watch you, too.
