I'm 38.5 weeks. At my doctor's appointment today, he told me I was 50% effaced, but not yet dilated. I was curios to see how many of you went into actual labor after you found out your cervix started thinning out. Also, is it true that after you're 100% effaced, you start dilating? I know every woman's body is different, but I'm just very interested to find out. Thank you.

it doesn't mean ANYTHING in relation to when you'll go into labor. Sorry. I know you're on the home stretch and are probably ready for it to be over already, but you can't predict. With both my babies I was always told I was not dialated or effeced at all, with my first I went 2 days later, with my son, I went the very same day.

Every body is different! Sorry... With all three of mine I went in for normal checkups and found out I was 8 cm dilated... With NO contractions, and was less than 20% effaced..(went straight to hospital to be induced before baby "fell"out!!!) Effaced just means your cervix is thinning preparing for labor... could be an hour, could be another week...or two. Dilating is what actually starts labor....but I have had friends that were dilated to 2 and 3 cm for a week or two with nothing either! Just wait it out hun... and CONGRATS!!!

honestly i was never told about being effaced or not. i just went into the doctor for my weekly in the 9th month (4 days before i was due) and he told me i was 3 cm dilated and to go to the hospital soon (where i sat for 10 hours without too much progress) finally they broke my water and gave me some medicine to induce my labor ( i was fine with it) so it would be over with sooner (the doctor didnt want me to deal with multiple doctor's after his shift was over because of waiting) which im grateful for.

I had to be induced because I was 7 days late at the time. I went 10 days late before my son was born. Though I was dialated 2 cm for 6-8 weeks. I don't remember losing my plug, then again I don't remember much of the delivery either, I was too drugged up since they couldn't get the epidural needle in between my bones.

the more effaced you are...the easier it is for your cervix to dilate. the mucous holds it closed.
