Thought of both of those in the 1st season, now I honestly dont think the writers even know.

It has been confirmed by the writers of LOST that the characters are neither dead nor are they in purgatory. That being said, there are many guesses available all over the net as to where the characters are. We do know that the plane crashed because a giant electron magnet pulled it out of the sky. We also know that they aren't dead or in purgatroy because when the magnet finally blew up a woman with connections to the island recieved a phone call about the explosion.
It is my opinion that wherever the characters are is an area that has strong magnetic properties which creates an area where ship's instruments won't work. That is why they aren't able to get off the island and why they haven't seen any rescue planes or ships.

The writers already ruled out purgatory. Check out the Lost website, there are a lot of opinions out there.
I think it really sucks that they ended the season only after it seemed like a few episodes. I almost don't want to start watching again.

Not entirely sure what the show is about, but a few things from watching, I think they are alive just on a island that had several expirements going on, then those people, maybe they had their memory tampered with. Then the plane crashes with the people we see now, and there is no way of escaping, unless they find a ship big enough for all the survivors. Maybe there is boat or something on another part we haven't seen yet.

I don't believe they are dead. I believe that they are in Anartica. The reason that is warm and tropical might has something do with the huge magnetic field that destroyed the bunker in Season 2. But who knows what's really going on. Have the writing staff are comic book writers. So just sit back and enjoy the show. :)

Purgatory is not a state of being lost. It is a state of being purified for heaven.
Everybody in purgatory is on their way to heaven. It is a place of forgiveness and hope.
With love in Christ.

The very last episode of the series you're all going to find out that it's just a dream by one of the passengers.
The plane's going to touch down at its destination safe and sound jarring the sleeping passenger awake revealing that it was all just a dream (or if you prefer, nightmare)

Sounds very plausible. However she did have a baby and some have died or almost died since then. Although I haven't an episode since season 1. I love it I just have a conflicting schedual.

Naw, I think they might be on Gilligan's Island, though. Think about it - the skipper, Mary Ann, Ginger... at this point 9in their sad plot, anything's plausible.
