I have wanted to purchase a guitar for several months now and think that it would be awesome to know how to play. But the only problem is that I don't know how much time I will acctually have to invest in order to play. All I want to do is know how to play a few songs and have some fun. But I don't have three or four hours a day to spend practicing. If I only spend thirty minutes to an hour practicing/day will that be enough time to accomplish anything? I would appreciate any words of encouragement or even just honest opinions! Thanks!

Yes. You've already answered your own question. You don't want to be the next Stevie Ray Vaughn or Malmsteen.

Get a guitar. Practice the half hour a day. Learn the songs you want to play.

Go for it! You can always buy a used guitar to start with, to see if you really want to keep going with it. Practicing 30 minutes to an hour a day is excellent! That's how you make progress. And online, there are tons of websites that have the chords for rock and country songs, so once you know some basic chords, you can strum along with your favorite songs without having to buy the songbooks.

For guitars, Alvarez is a good acoustic to start out with. Yamaha also, and Takamines are beautiful! For electrics, you can't go wrong with a Fender. They make Stratocasters in Mexico now that have a really nice sound, so you won't have to spend the big bucks on an American-made guitar.

Here is one of my favorite sites. You search by artist, so check it out.

Hey there. First of all, Congrads on picking up a new hobby!!! I am sure you'll do fine. Buying a guitar can be costly so I would suggest taking a few lessons first. You can also buy software programs that will actually teach you how to play.

Lastly, spending an hour or so a day is certainly enough time to learn. Sure it depends how fast you learn but I have faith. Rock on!

ive tried to guitar beginning a few years ago...but never really got to spend more than a few hrs a week. Ive learned a few things here and there. Its definitely nice to have something there that i can jam out on if i want. Don't be discouraged if you dont have time now, buy a cheaper one and im sure you'll eventually get a chance. Check guitar tabs online, etc. (about.com) has a few great tips and articles (beginner strum patterns, chords, etc.)

you should get a guitar, it is really fun, and you don't need a whole lot of time to learn how to play, there are a lot of really easy songs to learn that don't take long like songs by alkaline trio and the dropkick murphys usually punk bands have easy songs to learn, also once you get kind of good it becomes more fun to make up your own songs. I've been playing guitar for a long time and I have no regrets about learning.

If you want to, you should get one, but the thing with guitar is that you have to be really patient with yourself, it takes awhile to learn. A great website that will help you learn is vguitarlessons.com. The guy gives you 12 free lessons that are very beginner friendly. You should check it out if you decide to buy the guitar. Good luck!!

If its something you really want to do, i would say go for it! Or maybe test the waters first...as someone you know who has a guitar to let you borrow for a couple of days to see how well you work with it...maybe if you ended up liking it, you will push somethings aside and make more time for it...
