And I don't just mean in a gallery, I mean how can I do it independantly. Banksy, one of my favorite contemporary artists, just had an exhibition in a warehouse. Maybe I can do something like that, but I'm not sure how? Some ideas?

Find a free space, (some coffee houses will let you hang your work for free) get a mailing list, do a mailing and have a show.
that's how you do it!

The hard part is to get a good mailing list. Get all your friends to put their heads together. Your friends are probably as "artistic" as you so chances are they won't buy much. But their parents might.

Put up flyers around town, talk to everyone, invite your boss, get your friends to help. Have a band or musician play for free. Have your mother make the refreshments get someone to donate the wine. Never spend money you don't have.

You may not sell a thing the first time but people are now on your mailing list and they probably brought someone who next time will bring someone etc. etc. Eventually someone will dole out hard cash for your work, and others will follow. don't over price your work. figure your time at a little more that the wage you made at your last job plus supplies and rent on the space you lived while doing the work.

Good luck Kid you'll need it. (I'll just assume you are a kid because it's your first time). The most successful artists are not always the most talented but they are the most persistent. Tenacity is the most important word to any great success.

You need to find your desired location.. be it a gallery, warehouse, school, private business, or wherever and you need to approach the owner of the location and tell them what you're all about. I would bring a portfolio and come with specific plans for the space. You've got nothing to loose, so I would just go out there and find a space that you like and ask if you can show your work there!

you might want to become more well known before you stage your own show, and If you happen to like Banksy then maybe graffiti is the way to begin. But if you do feel like having your own show, you need lots of original work, a place to show your work and a means of publicizing the event. If you have friends who are artists they would be glad to help you (if you showed some of their work of course) Well, Good Luck.
