most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.
i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.

I assume, you are using the new Internet Explorer (IE 7) and you are referring to the blank space on each side of the window? If that's the case, the reason that space is there is to allow for zooming in. Take a look at the lower right hand corner of your browser and your will see a magnifying glass with a + in it. If you click on the + it zooms in and everything gets bigger.
You get the same result if you click on the numbers with the %. If you click on the down arrow to the righ of the % you can select the zoom or view ratio you would like to look at the website at.
Most people would use 100%, but sometimes you might want to use more or even less depending on the size of your display and/or the website page you are looking at.

There isn't a wait to completely make the gray area disappear unless you cram everything you have onto the minimal amounts of bars.
Its doesn't harm you, no harm, no foul done.
