I'm going to assume by "Irish Chain" you mean the "Double Irish Chain" because it's more common than the "Single Irish Chain." You need three different fabrics - a background for the large centers between the chains (often white or other light), a center chain (often dark), and an outer chain (often medium). If you want to put one or more borders on it, you'll need additional fabric. I will assume that you'll put a 2" inner border of the center chain fabric and a 5" outer border of another fabric.

For a lap quilt that is 44" x 64" with borders, making fifteen 10" blocks, you'll need:
background - 1 1/3 yards
center chain/inner border - 1 yard
outer chain - 7/8 yard
outer border and binding - 1 1/2 yard
backing - 2 7/8 yards

For a twin quilt that is 64" x 84" with borders, making 35 10" blocks, you'll need:
background - 2 1/4 yards
center chain/inner border - 1 3/4 yard
outer chain - 2 yards
outer border and binding - 2 yard
backing - 5 yards

For a queen quilt that is 84" x 104" with borders, making 63 10" blocks, you'll need:
background - 3 1/2 yards
center chain/inner border - 2 1/8 yards
outer chain - 2 1/2 yards
outer border and binding - 2 1/2 yards
backing - 7 3/4 yards

This info is based on the book "Quilts from the Quiltmaker's Gift" - an excellent instructional book.

It depends on how big your blocks are going to be and how large you plan on making your quilt. When making a quilt with specific colors I always buy 1-2 yards extra for those "mistakes". http://quilterscache.com/ is always a wonderful resource too!! Good Luck!
