I don't understand what they are supposed to do because in the book i bought it says that you are supposed to play the chords with the song but are you supposed to hold down the chord and just play that string? I don't understand this book at all...It shows a chord and then in the song below the chord it has the chords i the song...how do i play the chord while playing the song? Whenever I do this ( which ii don't think i should because it doesn't sound right..) i think that im doing something wrong....thanks

I am not for sure how your book is showing the music, but I think I can try to help you out. Most of the time they show the chord above the notes of the song. The single notes they are showing are the melody, and the chords are the harmony. I think it sounds best when you have two people, one to play each part. Also, if possible, listen to the song you are trying to learn. But try to only listen the the strumming to hear when they change chords, and what the strum pattern is. If this still doesn't help, there is always tablature.

The chord symbols show you what your LEFT hand should be doing. You may have a little picture of where the fingers go, or just a chord name to look up the pictures in a chord book. Your right hand strums most or all of the strings at once - you have to copy the rhythm by ear or make up your own. Not all records have basic strummed guitar chords, so such songs will sound very different played solo guitar style.

take a couple of lessons. learn how to play some bar chords and how to keep the guitar in tune. this will give you familiarity with different sounds. then start working on more complex chords. i think you are expecting to be jimi hendrix over night. take your time so you don't get frustrated and quit. learn the basics and play with anyone that will play with you, you'll learn a lot this way. good luck.

Have you ever tried to read tabs online? Guitar tabulature is an easy way to learn to play guitar and learn a song. It explains alot to you by where your fingers should go and how you strum it and the rythm. It's how Istarted. Check out this site:

Everything is listed alphabetically by band, then the songs are listed too. Good Luck and have fun!

You learn to change the strings on your guitar, then you learn to tune your guitar, then finger exercises, then scales, then, chords. get mel bay's chorde book. It's really good.

Most songs pop/rock whathaveyou are made up of chords, usually about 8 different ones are used in most pop songs, you should be able to play the chords and have it sound right, although there may be a rythym and a melody guitar part. so it may not sound totally right without both playing.

when you play a chord you are playing mutiple notes at once. and you strum a chord. make sure you arent laying your fingers against a string because that will alter it. just make sure your fingers are at the string they are supposed to be and not any other ones.

It's difficult to say what you are doing wrong. But you sound very frustrated.
