It's hard to say. The Chevrolet Corvette Z06 and Dodge Viper come to mind. They may not be as refined as Ferrari or Porsche, but they do deliver one hell of a kick in the shorts for under a 100K. Alot of pocket rockets can be had for under 40K. As far as looks go the new Corvette is sexy, but doesn't have the I'm gonna kick somebody's *** look as much as the Dodge Viper.

Corvette Z06 gets my vote, Nissan Syline GT-R is probably best for the money, but not US DOT legal in stock form.

Acura NSX, Viper SRT-10, and Porsche 911 Carrera S are nice but at the extreme end of the price range.
Most 1000 cc Sport-bikes "crotch rockets" are under $14,000, make 180+ hp, do 0-60 in under 3 seconds, top out in the 180's and get 30 some-odd mpg. Hard to beat unless it's snowing.

Edit: Industrial _strength has a good angle too but I'ld take a Lotus Elise or Exige over Miata anytime. They have been documented beating Ferrari 360 Modenas! Saturn Sky Redline over Miata speed series even, better looks, more power, although I give the Miata the build quality and aftermarket edge over the Saturn.

I like the new Z06, but I also agree with industrial_strength_bard about being unique, and I agree the Miata is a good car for the money with lots of potential, but since you didn't specify a new model, I’d suggest any classic convertible 'Vette, MG, Triumph Spitfire, Jag, or Alfa Spyder.

You can find any of these in good condition for well under the 100k mark, and have plenty left to restore or modify it to your taste.

Personally, I’d go with a Plain Jane mid ‘60s convertible ‘Vette with a small block, do a soft restoration, custom wheels and tires, and build the engine. You can still get a good deal on one to modify if they’re not a numbers matching car (original engine no longer in the car).

True, other cars will be faster, others will handle better, and others may look more exotic… but none will do it all as well as the ‘Vette, or turn as many heads.

For the fastest acceleration, probably the Chevy Corvette ZO6 for about $60,000 to $70,000. For a popular hardtop convertible, the Mercedes SL550 is just under $100,000. Another cool car is the BMW M6 for a little over $100,000. For a cool car that could park itself, get the Lexus LS460L or LS600h. It is kind of sporty and has the best technologies and comforts incorporated into one car. Research on the rear seats of this Lexus, you will be amazed. For a really cool car get the Porsche Cayman S, but if you're tall, get the Porsche 911 S.

Easy! The coolest sports car must fit several critera:

1) FUN!
2) Reliable. When you're zipping around corners at 90 MPH in the mountains or hard-lining it from a light to test your 0 to 60 times over and over again, you want it to go where you want and NOT give your "surprises"
3) Unique. If your car looks like every other car out there it just says "look at me, I bought an image" A TRUE sports car is unique and your own, with accessories and the ability to be modified to FIT you. This means it looks like the way you want it, and it handles the way you want it. You should never have to adjust to the car. The car should be able to be custom tailored to YOUR fit.

With all those factors, the best car I have found in my years as a mechanic and driving everything from Geo Metros to Maybachs is.....

The Mazda Miata.

Now, don't scoff. It may only be 1.8 litres of terror, but it has features that most $60k and up sportscars STILL don't have, and on the track the little roadster has repeatedly eaten up Porsches, Bimmers and Acuras (glorified hondas).

First off, the Miata is STUPID light! Weighing in far below just about any other luxury convertable, it's a featherweight that only needs a 4 cyl base to create amazing performance. Also, the Mazda desing of the motor enables a TON of performance mods to easily push 300+hp out of it. Soon, your power to weight ratio is up there in the same category as a Shelby Cobra or 911!

Second, it's a TRUE rear wheel drive! Try taking mountain roads in anything with front wheel drive, then try it in the Miata or any other comperable rear wheel drive car and you will see the advantage having the grip and power behind your spine .

Third, it is small. This means that it responds INSTANTLY to driver motion. And, it does so without heavy power assist equipment or "traction control" junk. It keeps it simple, wich means it will break down less and weigh less. The less junk you need to operate the car means there is more space for stuff to enhance the performance.

Forth, the aftermarket for these cars is WIDE open!! With varying types of superchargers, turbos, nitrous kits, body mods, suspension, and even differing types of hardtops to increase chassis stiffness, you can EASILY make one Miata that will look unlike ANY car out there, and there are tons of shops who will prefer to work on the little british inspired coupe faster than any BMW or Lexus because the parts are easy to get and CHEAP for the bang you get out of them.

The best part? You can get one for under $30k, and that includes every luxury option you can think of. Leather, GPS, alloys, ....whateva!

Remember that Mazda spent 15 years researching Italian and British roadsters to take what worked and what didn't and made a car that felt and looked like it belonged in the EU, but didn't come with a price tag. Even if you go all out with Eibach suspension, the most expensive custom wheelsets, top of the line Borla Superchargers and what not...you're still WAY below $50k, and it will smoke any acura while still being able to get parts off the shelf. Go ahead and see if you can get an alternator replaced in your NSX in less than 24 hours. Odds are it'll sit a week PLUS and they'll charge you for that time. For the time it takes to replace an ECU on that 911, you will of had your roadster out of the shop and up and down the PCH several times!

If you want "bling" and just look like you know what you're doing behind the wheel, then go with the most expensive because some rap video said it was "it". If you want a car that shows you what it REALLY means to dirve a sports car the proper way and will outperform nearly everything on the road with the right fit....then check out the Miata

Porsche 911, no contest. although you might be pushing the $100K limit, at least on some models -- it's an understatement when you say this car is FAAAAST...and the handling is like nothing you've ever experienced. it's the epitome of a real driving machine, and it'll still be cool 20 years after you leave the lot.
