Actually on this world, human just occupy 1% from all creatures population, angel about 9%, and genie about 90%.
Genie lives everywhere, in our house, on the street, jungle, cave, in our blood circulation, heart etc. therefore we can't say they just inhabit in those place only.
Just imagine, 1% of human being is about 6billion – so genie more 540billion. If one percent of human being already inhabit more than 60% of land on this planet… so where should genie lives?
I as a Muslim believe genie live everywhere because Koran tell us about.

Why we usually hear people keep mentioning that genie live in such place?
The answer for this question is simple:
1- Iblîs said: "O my Lord! Because you misled me, I shall indeed adorn the path of error for them (mankind) on the earth, and I shall mislead them all.
This Quranic ayah, confirm that genie and Satan will always mislead mankind. So, they will do everything to make us deceive from way of God. Why?
2- Because they are jealous with human because of us more superiors than other creature.
Iblîs said: "I am not the one to prostrate myself to a human being, whom You created from sounding clay of altered black smooth mud."
3- They will satisfy / felt success when human fear to them – Superior creature afraid of us. So, they will disguise as hideous creature in order to make people afraid. When some one go to remote area, jungle or mountain where less human – they will be more confirmable to act.
If we read hadith, prophet Mohammed urges us to give salam before we enter our house. It is because, if we don’t do it, genie or Satan will first step in our house. Also, he urge us not leave our house more than a week. It is because, genie always finding shelter or place for live. After one week, our house will full with genie (may be bad one or good one). So, if we leave our house empty for more than a week, we must at least give salam before enter our house.
So, why they like to reside on those places? The answer just because they don’t have other option.

Because humans aren't safe anymore. We don't believe in something other than what is given to us. You ever notice little children stare off into the trees, it's because they can see them. I can't see them but I can sense them. I live near a forest so they come by here a lot. I think the main reason why they reside there is because it a safe haven. It is only the only place where magic still can be real and not mistaken for something else.

You know some of my family members are ol skool and were brought up to belive this and I was told a couple times that this is true (very common in eastern cultures) although I hardly belive this is true because I have been in these situations one too many times and have never seen, heard or felt anything.......it's basically an ol folks tale unless you religiously belive in this sort of thing....
This was something told to little kids so they would come back home before dark in the olden times and not wonder around late in the woods and girls were also told to put their hair up otherwise banshees would get in their hair and follow them home...
It aint true though dude I'm telling you!!!

Each 1 of those places have meaning in their area, surroundings, etc. It is a metaphor to depict their nature!
