Every State is different. Check with the professional teaching board in your state. You do not have to have a degree in most cases. You can Coach after school and work in the community. I coached while I was in college. You will probably need to be a certified coach by taking a few classes. 1st aid/CPR, Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries, Adolescent Psychology, and a spot specific theories class (Football in your case). Some states waive the classes out of desparation for coaches.

Yes, you need a degree because coaches- at least high school coaches, usually have to teach a class or two. For that you need a teaching certificate.
