I have been writing a book, and I wasn't really going to try to get it published but I was thinking that I should give it a try. What publishing companies are out there? Any that I should or shouldn't send to?

There are several publications that talk about different publishing companies, and the process of getting published. If you're like me and don't have a lot of money your best bet is to go to your local library.
I would also recommend trying to find a local writer's critque group to join before trying to submit your work anywhere. It's amazing the difference that a non-biased opinion can make.
I'm currently working on a YA fiction novel and joining a local group here has made an enormous difference with my writing.

Another good way to decide which companies to submit to would be to go to you're local bookstore and look at the type of books you're trying to get published. Check which companies are publishing your type of book. Some people also suggest that trying to find agent is a good idea too, because of the legal stuff (i.e. contracts)

There are also book on self-publishing, or using the internet to publish your works. I would seriously recommend checking the library. I live in a fairly small, hick/redneck town but the library here actually had a pretty good selection.

Good luck with your endeavors.

You need to get a copy of "Writer's Market", a comprehensive listing of all publishers in the US and what kind of things each is looking for. Or you can subscribe online to www.writersmarket.com
