Ok forget about the wizard, that just messes things up. Do this. On both computer right click MyComputer and go to properties. On the computername tab go to it and cick on change. Then where it says workgroup name both of the in the same workgroup. For example call them both "YOURNAMEGOESHERE" meanin your name...
Anywhow, if you have a router get both of them connected to the hub. Also on the mynetworkplaces right click it and go to properties. Then on the LocalAreaNetwork right click and go to properties. Then double click on TCP/IP and assign a similar ipaddress to both machine. For example 192.168.1.100 and 192.168.1.101.
You have to make sure that you have them connected with the ethernet cable in order for them to communicate. Open MyComputer and right click on drive C and click on sharing and just share it out. After you do these things just restart both machines and you should be able to transfer files.

Good Luck.

if you already have a router and it's hooked up, then you already have a network going. Just add your laptop to the network and allow those files you want to move to be "shared" files. i.e. share the "my documents" file or whatever.

If you don't have a router, then you aren't going to have much luck setting up a network with just two computers. you need the connection to go between them. My advice would be to transfer as much as possible to a CDRW CD and then transfer that info into your laptop under the same file name. That's if you don't have a USB port or a router. That's the best way to do it in my opinion. You'll obviously have to rewrite over the data you just transferred, unless you have several CDRWs you can fill up.

Good luck.

first off you need a router
connect the cable from your modem into the router (not in any of the number labeled ports, but in the one labeled WAN) instead of connecting it directly to your pc, then run a cable from one of the numbered ports to your pc and another to your laptop, then you have to run the network wizard on both computers.

Hints: 1.the network must be named the same on both computers otherwise won't work
2.Don't need to make a network disk if you're running the same operating system on both computers i.e. windows XP
if they're different then make a network disk it doesn't matter from what computer but just one disk is enough

don't forget to share the folder you want to access from the other computer (right click on folder then click shared and check the "share this folder box"

Buy a copy of clone pc...Copying all your file thru a network requires you to set each file to be "shared" and that will take a while but can be done. just open your C drive and right click on each folder and select properties and set the sharing to public or whatever the OS tells you...drag to sharing folder or whatever.
