My tree is the fake, put together kind, but it's a good one and looks real. No dry needles to impale myself on when I would have to drag it downstairs to the trash. It's 7 1/2 feet tall, so it's on the floor. Also, I have it backed up against a wall, so I don't put on the back half of the branches. Works really well. Note: if you do the same thing one day, word of warning: weigh down the backside of the tree stand with heavy books. Why? When you put all the decorations on it....the tree will be front heavy since you haven't got branches on the back and it will fall over. How do I know? Because of the great Christmas tree disaster of 2004; happened to me.

This year I only used a 3ft fiber optic tree,so I sat it on a end table in front of the window. It worked great,it could be seen from outside and didn't take up a lot of space. I also have a 6ft tree, but did not set it up this year,it would have sat in front of a different window but the stand would have been on the floor.

When my kids were little I had it on a table with a low fence around it. Now they are older and that's all gone, however, I still need to remind them that it is not a toy.
