Despite Ronaldinho performing at an average level, much less praiseworthy, for the past year? I think other players were more deserving of that spot...such as maybe Pirlo, Buffon, Henry or Schweinsteiger...all players that shone more brightly on the world stage than did Ronaldinho.

Also, do you think many people seem to hold a godly view or maybe a sort of blind faith in Ronaldinho? He is a good player no doubt about it, but even when his performances do not match what people expect of him, many (not all) still regard him as the best. No one is perfect! I do not understand how Ronaldinho even managed to attract one vote.

Therefore I think that his reputation is stronger than his actual performance in what people see him as.

Yes. He was invited because he has won it before himself. They're not inviting him fir an award anyway.

Ronaldinho is the best player in the world even though he finished third in the voting. He LED Barcelona to those titles last season. This season, ever since he got back into form (november) he carries Barca again, with his goals, assists and performances. DO YOU KNOW WHO TOOK BARCA TO THE NEXT ROUND IN THE CL? GOAL AGAINST WERDER, ANYONE???? UEFA ranked that goal #1 goal of the group stage. It was Barca's most important match of the season so far. Perhaps of the entire season. If you don't know why, I won't explain to you.

If it wasn't only for his goals, Barcelona would have 9 point less now and their title race would be pretty much over. Last season after 15 matches they had the same amount of points that they have now and now Eto'o has been injured since fourth match (with Valencia). Generally speaking, do you know how Barcelona struggles every time Ronnie doesn't play. 90% they either lose or draw. Arsenal can play normally without Henry. This season, for example, they beat Man U and had an away draw with Chelsea without him. What can Barca do without Ronaldinho?

As for the WC, there was an article on some site that summarized what happened to Brazil in the best possible way - "collective collapse". Some say Kaka played well - in, what, one game? It's not about how well one player is playing, - IT'S ABOUT WHERE HIS PLAY TAKES HIS TEAM and Kaka didn't take Brazil anywhere and my opinion is that he can't take them any further than where Ballack can take Germany or Beckham England etc. Kaka is a good player but not on Ronaldinho’s level, simply not in his class. If Ronaldinho was in form and allowed to play in HIS position, Brazil would've got far last summer. But it wasn't the case, and Kaka playing at his best couldn't do much/anything.

P.S. To milanist_girl,

What you are saying about Ronnie is just sour grapes. Berlusconi wants Ronaldinho. He would sell Kaka anytime to Real Madrid if only he could get Ronaldinho. Now I don't know whether he admits that ;)

Ronaldinho IS NOT A STRIKER. He is an attacking midfielder or a second striker. His main job is to assist, not to score goals. Eto'o's job is to score goals. And now in Eto's absence, Ronaldinho scored 12 goals so far this season - 5 penalties, 3 freekicks and 4 from free play including THAT goal against Villarreal - all that in 13(!) games he's played (he missed matches with Celta and Levante). What is Kaka doing for Milan? Where is Milan in Serie A? Near relegation zone?

Peace.

I agree with what you said, there were definately more deserving players i think buffon or henry should have been one of the contenders the brazilians didnt go that far in the FWC.
about the godly view well its probably due to all the publicity he gets i mean he is showcased in many adverts and even has a comic strip.he is getting more famous than beckham.i know he is a brilliant player but for this past year it was just an average performance compared to the previous years.

Barca won La Liga and Champions League ( undefeated ), Ronaldinho scored 24 goals and assisted 17 goals for Barca ( more than 95 % of all strikers in the world ) and the difference between him and others was that almost all of his goals and assist were spectacular, every player score a spectacular goals or provide really impossible pass but for Ronaldinho those type of things were normal, he played almost 70 games last season, only Makelele was the one that played more games than him and even this season he scored 25 goals already ( his personal best )!!!! The problem is that people are expecting too much from him, if he doesn't do something spectacular the whole world is saying that he is not in the form anymore, last CL games he was already burn out and if Barca didn't have Larsson Arsenal would be the CL winner!!!! He played 70 games, went straight to USA tour ( when other players were resting and preparing for the WC ) and came to the WC 2006 without one day to rest, it was impossible to perform well for him!!! People that know those facts voted for him and it's funny how people are saying that he is out of form but he scored 25 goals on the half of the season, when his average was 20 goals per whole season and Barca didn't lost one game in La Liga since Eto'o and Messi were injured, because of his goals and assists!!!!! Absence of Eto'o and Messi forced Ronaldinho to play different, he is not spectacular as he used to be, but he became more responsible and more focused on scoring goals than dribbling!!!!! People are forgetting that, Barca has no strikers and because of that him and Deco must do double work!!!!!

@milanist_girl

First of all... you said, if Barca wouldn't win CL he wouldn't get 3rd position, in 2005 Liverpool won CL and Ronaldinho got the FIFA award and would Canavaro win the FIFA ward if Italy didn't won the WC, so you are completely wrong on this one..... who said that he can't play good with Brazil, if you read my answer above, you will notice why he didn't play good in the WC and from Brazilian team no one play good, not even Kaka but don't worry, he will be back in Selecao and he will prove that he is the best player in the world.... so wrong again.... he scored 6 goals from penalties ( 90%??? ) and to score a goal from free kick you need skills, so I don't know what exactly is your point... and I didn't say that he play worse since Eto'o and Messi are injured, I said that he plays even better now, he improved his other skills that he didn't have before and that's leader skills, Barca is doing just fine with him as a only key player in the team... you should go and check your statements about him not scoring and assisting important goals, because you are wrong in this one as well!!!!!

btw: I know that is hard for you that Milan will never have a player like Ronaldinho, but you must except this fact and respect him as the best player in the world in last three years and for next five years!!!! :)

Are you joking me? I hope you are. Ronaldinho helped Barca win domestic league and Champs league this last season! remember he was MVP .........sure he had a weak performance in the WC but let's not forget his club career....this man is deserving of being nominated... even more than Schweinsteiger!

yes i agree..what has Ronaldinho ever done this year to be mentioned at worlds top footballer..with Barca or Brazil..he didnt achieve a single thing like you said they put him third just because of his reputation..and he took the third best player in the world club cup just because of his reputation..though it should have been Mohamed Abo-treka..many other players desrved third best player in the world..the ones you mentiond..+deco or Eto'o..Ronaldinho used to be the best player when he started..now he lost his touch

I totally agree with you. Don't get me wrong I think Ronaldinho is one of the best players of the World but he is not showing it anymore. And yeah you're right his reputation comes before him nowadays and people judge what he used to be and not his actual performance. Maybe last season he has scored many goals and he should score coz he is a striker but what was his performance in the most important matches e.g Champions League final or the whole WC, well it was definitely under the average. But he still gets 3rd position in Fifa World Player of the year?! Maybe coz Barça won the CL and La Liga?! If Barça would have come 2nd in both competitions he surely wouldn't have come 3rd. And I think the fact that he can't play with the national team it's a serious problem coz all great players have performed and should perform highly with their national team as well as with their club. So I think maybe there's a reason why Ronaldinho plays better with Barcelona? Maybe coz the team plays as he likes and players like Eto'o help him very much etc
And Maradona Jnr says he is not playing as before coz of the absence of players like Messi or Eto'o. He has different responsabilities now. Well I remember when they weren't injuried the way he was playing, terrible, e.g the first match against Werder and other La Liga matches. He is scoring, yeah ,but how come he scores in 90% of cases by free kicks and penalty shoot outs or he scores spectacular goals when they aren't neccesary(the forth goal in a match?) and I don't understand how come the best player of Barcelona stays the major time in the pitch only passing the ball in 1-2 metres distance or loosing the ball like he does in several occasions, isn't he supposed to be the leader and carry on the team?!

First of all, Barcelona is a great and glorious team but you should know that Milan fans NEVER can't be jealous of anything Barcelona has, since we have 3 times more CL tiltes than Barça, we have beaten them 4-0 in a CL final and Milan has had and still has players like Ronaldinho. Remember players like Gullit, Van Basten or Savicevic among others and now Kaka', who I think and many players & coaches consider to be the best player in the World actually. Another thing is that I never wanted Dinho to come and play with Milan coz I think he can't play and he can't bear a strong and defensive league like Serie A in which few Latin Americans esp Brazilians have succeded. Dinho had the luck to play in La Liga while a player like Kaka' played in Serie A since he was 21 and he play great from the beginning without having any problems. You said Kaka' didn't play well in the WC but if it wasn't for him and mainly his goal vs Croatia Brazil would have struggled to pass the group stage and if it wasn't for his passes they would have struggled to get into quarter finals too. So to me he played very well, he was the best for Brazil like many people say. Anyway I won't go on with Kaka' coz we're not ending the discussion in a 1000 years then.
I said 90% of Dinho's goals are scored by penalty shoot outs & free kicks and you say no, well then tell me how many goals he has scored on action this season. If it's not 10 but it's 15% I will correct myself, but are they enough for a player who considers himself a striker?! I write what I watch and you have the right to defend Ronaldinho coz he is your favorite player while I have the right to say he isn't playing better but much worse without Eto'o or Messi. That's my opinion. And maybe he was tired during the WC but I have watched all the friendly matches Brazil has played till now and he has played badly as well. Don't tell me it's coz they are friendly matches coz he is risking a place in Brazil's starting line-up for official matches with his perfomance. I have also said that Dinho is one of the best players of the World, he has got amazing skills nobody is dening that, but sometimes skills aren't enough, or do you consider Beckham, a superb free kicks taker, the best player of the World?! Dinho was the best in the past 2 years when he got the Golden Ball and Fifa World Player both times (Barça had won La Liga both times too remember they had won sth) but I don't think he is anymore though experts thought since he had won the CL and La Liga again they should't let him out of the prize though there were players that deserved to be there more than him like Henry for example(he had the bad luck to loose the CL and the WC) and I'm far from being a fan of Henry! I've also said Cannavaro shouldn't get both the prizes coz you don't get those prizes just for winning sth. Anyway I respect your opinion and you have to respect mine and only time will tell who is right. You think Dinho would be the best player for 5 more years, I don't but how come I read in one answer of yours that Milan will get him when he becomes 28?! So your opinion is that Milan will get the best player of the World some day! :) I don't agree with you in both cases coz Milan won't get him. Anyway bye & peace!

Well, I've said much till now and I just want to add sth. Kaka' didn't take Brazil anywhere?! He took them till quarter finals and in that match aganist France he didn't play well coz he was coming from an injury and he was forced to play, if he would have played at his best in that match too, you don't know wether Brazil would have qualified or not. And he is not doing much for Milan?! He has scored 5 goals in the CL till now, he made them qualify from their group stage with his assist and goal vs Aek and his 4 goals vs Anderlecht (3 in one only match) and he has scored some imortant goals that helped Milan get some positions in the table. So if you don't watch Milan's matches, please don't talk abt them. And Dinho is not a striker?! I think Barça playes 4-3-3 and Dinho gets the role of a striker, with the national team he was playing as a midfielder in the same line with Kaka' (that is an attacking midfielder) and he said it was not his role. And you have never heard Berlusconi's words of course coz he has always promised to Milan fans that he would never ever sell Kaka' for Dinho or someone else. On the other hand in a poll done with Barcelona fans sone time ago, it appeared that aproximately 20% or more of them wanted to give Dinho to Milan and get Kaka'. How strange for people that have always seen Ronaldinho play with their team and 'do miracles' like you say!!!
