Nope. I've been popping my knuckles (and just about every other joint) as far back as I can remember (but then again i'm only 22) and I wear a ring size 2 1/2.
As for the popping sound . . joints produce that when bubbles burst in the fluid surrounding the joint. All of the joints in our bodies are surrounded by synovial fluid.
As far as other damage there hasn't been any successful studies to suggest that this is in fact bad for you but overtime repeated stretching of the ligaments surrounding the joint might cause soft tissue damage to the joint capsule and a slight decrease in grip strength.
On the plus side however, there is evidence of increased mobility in joints right after popping (that is what gives you that nice 'loose' feeling . . like after a massage).

Speaking from personal experience, I would say so. I have had a bad habit of popping my knuckles ever since childhood, and I have very fat knuckles to this very day! This may not be the scientifically correct answer, but that's what happened to me!

No. Popping your knuckles is simply breaking nitrogen bubbles in your cartilage. It has no long term effects. The arthritis thing is an old wives tale because it is considered impolite and unladylike for a woman to pop her knuckles. It also will not cause your knuckles to swell to abnormal size.

A nurse told me that cracking your knuckles and your back (and any other joints that are popped) will actually HELP those joints, rather than hurt them. Your knuckles will not increase in size, they will just feel good! Lol. Popping or cracking your knuckles will release gases in them and help you :-)
I really hope that I helped you out!

Not at all. There may be some evidence that doing it at a younger age can lead to arthritis at an older age, but they don't even know if that's true. It's just releasing gas/water from the joints. I can crack my knuckles, back, neck, toes, ankles, wrists, shoulders... It feels good when you do it, who cares if it DID make them bigger!!

I asked my surgeon this and the respond isn't any, it does not. The popping which you pay attention is led to with the aid of fluid and a few gases being released between your joints, the fluid and gasoline at last comes back into the joint at a later time, it is why you could pop your knuckles back quarter-hour later.

Yes, once you get arthritis your knuckle joints will become inflamed and look all big and ugly you also will have limited movement.
Stop doing it, it's also bl00dy annoying for other people to listen to!

NO....it is only gas being released from within the joint.
There has been no scientific evidence to support that theory at all.

It's another "old wive's tale" probably invented to discourage kids from doing it. It doesn't cause arthritis either.
