Maybe you talk to much and they want you to shut up. Could also be something they ate get them a glass of water if they still clear their throat you should probably shut up. This way you do not alienate them further.

Throat clearing can be a sign of anxiety, a kind of nervous tic. Were you talking about something that was uncomfortable for that person? It could also signify that the person was trying to get a word in edgewise -- perhaps you were dominating the conversation?

Either they have a scratchy throat and you should give them a throat lozenge or you had better end your conversation quick. You have either bored them to death or you walked out of the bathroom with your dress in your underwear.

probably means they're nervous....or they ate something really greasy for lunch and it's stuck in their throat.
