YOU ARE NOT TOO OLD! keep playing, keep practicing, and keep learning. Do it because you love it. Dont do it because you want to be famous and you will be just fine.
My advice is to talk to every guitarist you know and ask them to teach something. Then your range of skill will broaden and allow you to expand your ability. keep your heart in it!
Good luck

Just make sure every practice has at least half of its time aimed at something. While fooling around freely doesnt hurt, and is how most people make great songs, you need to know the basics and get them down so when you do fool around your fingers allready know where to go, not your brain thinking of where to go.
Since your just starting, if your motivated enough to practice an hour straight a day(or two, whatever you can do without feeling like your going to school and boring yourself with guitar workouts), set up a routine.Get afive or ten minute warmup, then set aside lets say twenty minutes on learning chords, then twenty minutes on learning scales, and with the remaining amount of time practice a technique- work on a specific type of strumming, or hammer ons, slidies, etc. Once you have particular chords and scales down, Id recommend trying to do them without looking at the fretboard.A lot of us learn by looking and then when we play in front of people its a pretty bad show cause we just stare at our fretboard. And you wanna go pro so look at the audience and get them into it.
Oh yeah, Then move on to more scales and chords.
Gilmour is a man who plays a lot of chords, and knows their variations. Many of his riffs are played by holding a chord and playing the individual notes(called arpeggios when you play them like that-many people only call it an arpeggio when you dont hold down all the notes of the chord and just go at it like a normal riff, but its the same thing), so knowing chords will help you be Gilmour-esque.
Vai uses a lot of techniques, but I recall him doing phrases a lot(I havent listened to Via in years mind you), so try those out-basically make a starting point, and when your finished the passage go back to the starting point but add a slighly different take on the ending.
Dunno what Nuno does, cant help you there.Last suggestion is to buy a metronome and tuner, and keep yourself in good timing and tuning.

Just stick with it and Practice, Practice, Practice! You're never too old. I'm 47 and not until recently did I start to play guitar. Everyone else in my family does, so ....what the hell!
I know it's not really "your style" of music, but you should be able to appreciate their virtuosity. Take a listen to a guy named Walter Trout. For example: a song called I'm tired. (you can probably find these on limewire.com) It's killer!
Or listen to Luther Allison, he's one helluvan electric blues guitarist! Either can make it scream. I think you'll get into it. You should delve into different styles of music if you truly want to be great! Good Luck and keep on rockin'

FIRST OF ALL DUDE:
Just to let you know, Rage Against The Machine/Audioslave/ #26 greatest guitarist of all time (according to Rolling Stone Magazine) guitarist Tom Morello did not start practicing guitar seriously until he was 18 years old. So, youre never too old to start playing, just make sure you dont mess up your fingers or ears (wear earplugs and do some warmups before playing).
Secondly,
Play for the love of playing, not for the fame or crap like that. If you want it bad enough, youll get it.

look around and see if there is anyone u know that has been playing for a while that might give u a few tips. the main thing is to practice practice practice. if you have the passion for playing u will go far. don't ever give up on your dream. You can learn to play like the great ones but try to develop your own style of playing as well .

All I can say is practice, practice, practice. Those are some real good influences to have. It took those guys years to get to where they are now. You have to be extremely dedicated. But I'll give you some advice. Develope your own style. It's great to have influences and all that, but play YOUR way, not the way somebody else sounds. Like I said, it takes alot of dedication. Don't lose your focus.

Words for you in simple terms
Be ready to suffer for the art---be ready to sacrifice your time and energy and efforts----in other words--be ready to LIVE the music
Once it goes from your heart to your fingers---you're there---you'll know it and from there---it all falls into place !!!
