People from Africa can come here and spread AIDS, for one thing. Even if you don't care about Africa don't you care about small children left without parents. In the US AIDS is largely a homosexual disease, in Africa that is not the case. There are plenty of other things that kill folks in third world countries, so to say AIDS will control the population is simply not true. People there die of simple infections or starvation every day.

Your apparent selfishness aside for a moment, the U.S. government does not spend your money. It spends its money. It got that money from taxpayers, but it belongs to the government.

Also, fighting AIDS in Africa can be for humanitarian reasons. Saving lives is a good thing.

Further, saving those lives is good for Americans and it's good for the world. Stopping the spread of AIDS anywhere has beneficial global repercussions. Fewer people with AIDS means you're less likely to get it.

In addition, there is no overpopulation problem. There are numerous other problems from drought in places to lack of basic health care and clean water.

That you don't care about Africa is irrelevant. You live in a country and indeed a world that has other people in it. You (thank God) are not the dictator of the world and your opinion barely matters.

Though your question is narrow minded and bigoted I will give you a straight forward answer..... The US gives money for the fight on AIDS for the same reason we give money to fight poverty in Africa and tsunamis in Asia... We are to care about the world and when we don't open our wallets wide and let every one vacuum them out , America is looked at as cold hearted SOBs that only care about themselves and every celebrity and world leader is on the media waves condemning us.

In 1999, the U.S. government is spending $ 125 million on HIV prevention and AIDS care worldwide; $ 74 million of it is devoted to Africa.
April 8, 2001 UN Plans to Raise $6 Billion a Year to Fight Africa AIDS
The beginning and the end of this is U.S. money," said Harvard economist Jeffrey Sachs, a consultant to the organizations. "The drug companies are not going to solve the problem on their own. This has finally come down to the bottom line of whether the taxpayers will help do that."

I kind of agree to an extent. The government should be using that money to fight AIDS in the US, but, we are trying to keep/make allies. It's sort of an I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine. You know? It's not that I don't care about Africa, it's just that I think we should take care of home first.

The goverment doesnt spend much to fight AIDS in Africa. Better question might be "why do we give Israel so much money". AIDS does decrease the population, in a slow, suffering way. It's too bad that you don't care about your fellow man in Africa. I feel sorry for you.

The gov't spends money to fight aids in Africa, due to the fact that we have the money and hegemonic influence on the world to make others want to help as well. And they are more widely affected in Africa than we are. PLUS we must stop the source as well as the offsprings of aids.

Lucky for you Bush didn't spend the money to fight aids in Africa, he gave it to churches to teach abstinence, these churches then failed to keep records on how they spent the money, and a lot of it is unaccounted for

May your love forever be gloved or you might wind up in the same boat. Why should the government spend your money to fight AIDS? DUH, LET'S SEE,...IT'S A GLOBAL PROBLEM!!!!!!
