Most doctors schedule it for the 20th week. I got mine at 19 weeks and found out I was having a boy. It was very accurate. It was obvious he was a male. Congrats on your baby!

To answer your first question, depending on the quality of the ultrasound machine and operator, you can usually tell (on the average)at about 14-18 wks. Of course the later the ultrasound the more you will be able to see. I would not count on seeing the sex of the baby before 15 weeks.
To answer your second question the heart rate thing is a old wives tale. I have been a labor and delivery nurse over 25 years and I will joke around with our patients about the heart rate (120-140 boy 140-160 girl) also if the baby will not stay on the monitor I say that it must be an active boy. I of course tell my patients that these are just tales.

I was 19 weeks pregnant when I got my ultrasound and told me it was a boy. It was VERY clear. The whole heart rate thing is so not true. A baby's heart beat changes a lot. When I heard the baby's heart beat for the 1st time at the doctor's office, she told me it was 170. They say over 140, it's a girl. Lower than that, it's a boy. She was like "oh, it can be a girl." But then the ultrasound proved her wrong. Seriously, don't believe that. Just trust the good old ultrasound hun. Goodluck.

At 18 weeks you can tell the gender but I don't think that there's a difference between boy and girl heart rates

I have heard that by 20 or so weeks you can clearly see the baby's sex organs in ultrasound, my son decided to keep us guessing right to the end. He pulled up his feet right to his bum during both ultrasounds and kicked at the thing they put on your belly whenever they stopped to take measurements. Also about the heart rate, boys are supposed to be on eht lower end, 140/min and lower and girls are on the higher end at 140/min and higher. During my pregnancy the baby's heart rate was always in the 50's, twice being about 164, and again like I said I had a boy. So I am not too sure just how much stock to put into these ideas, I chalk them up to wive's tales pretty much. Also that chinese gender prediction calendar, everyone I know with 1 exception it has said one sex and the baby was born the other, myself included. I even tried it on both my mother's pregnancies, my sister and I were supposed to be boys according to that. My friend's only pregnancy all the way through they told her boy boy boy, her daughter in now just over 6 years old and looks nothing like a boy.

Usually the doctor does an ultrasound at 20 weeks and you can find out the sex then. Supposedly a girl's heart rate is faster. Doctors will tell you you can't go by that, but it's been true for me.

Well, i think it just depends on the baby really. my sister and sister in law didnt find out the sex of there babys until they were about 30 weeks. but i found out the sex of my baby at 19 weeks. i did have them confirm it at another ultrasound, when i was 26 weeks just to be sure. about the heart rate thing, i dont think that it matters, i was told that boys are suppost to have a higher heart rate, but im haveing a girl and hers is around 145.

I had my ultrasound at 20 weeks and it was very clear that we would be parents of a little girl. I've heard of people knowing the sex of their baby a little earlier than that.
The heartrate thing is just a wives tale. Your OB would probably tell you the same thing, as mine did when I asked. I know people who have looked at the Chinese lunar calendar to predict what they were having. Some were right on target and others weren't. I'd say anything not coming from a doctor's or nurse's mouth would be unreliable.

The ultrasound would be betwen 16 and 20 weeks. No there is no truth to the heart rate "rumor" because if it were my 21 year old pmsing, menstruating, 32 C bra wearing daughter would be a boy.

generally they do a 20 week ultrasound to check babies development and this is when the gender can be detected. However this can be done between 16 and 22 weeks. I found out at 18 weeks. The heartbeat thing is an old wives tale there is no proven science to it.

Both my children had heart rates between 135-155, our first was a girl, second a boy.
Both times I had ultrasounds around 20 weeks and they could tell. They aren't always going to be right or able to tell you either. Baby can be curled up and hiding the goods. ;)
