Anytime you are invited to a home for a gathering it is appropriate to bring a "host" "Hostess" gift. A small picture frame, food, a bottle of wine are just a few good gifts. It doesn't have to be anything large, just a token of appreciation for the invitation to someones home.

Depends what level of friendship you have with him/her? I think a gift of appreciation is always well received and a sign of a well educated person. It doesn't need to be anything expensive, it's the thought that counts...for women I suggest flowers, chocolates, candles, etc..for men, a bottle of champagne, wine, whiskey, chocolates (more masculine ones, like after eights because of the mint)...

All you really need to bring to a new year's party that would make everyone happy is FOOD! Chips and Dip or something. If it's a drinking party just bring a bottle for others to drink and then your own drink for yourself. You really probably don't need to bring anything, but it is polite.
