I was a teacher's aide for 4 years before resigning to get my BS in Early Childhood ed. I still substitute teach (for 2 years now), but it seems that I will have to student teach because I resigned. No Child Left Behind apparently will prevent me from being able to do an internship. (Must be highly qualified and certified.) Do I have any other options given my experience?

You have to student teach because you are going for an education degree.

The alternative certification path is for those that already have a degree in something other than education, but want to get into teaching. There are course requirements and less classroom observation requirements. And then there is the 1 year "internship" year, where you work as a regular teacher but you are not paid like a regular teacher.

Teaching in the public school system has become a big bureaucratic process, and sorry to hear that you got tangled up in it.

Here's another view. Why do you want to get out of student teaching? Being a teacher in charge of a classroom is much different from being a teacher's aide or substituting. You will have to be in charge of long-term planning, daily planning, and student assessment. As a student teacher, you will have the opportunity to work closely with a professional, to try out new ideas, and to get firsthand feedback on your teaching. If you really want to be a good teacher, there is no way around student teaching. Think of it as an opportunity instead of a roadblock.

Check out SBEC. It will give you a list of the alternative programs out there. There are two ways to accompish the student teaching: One is to complete a 12 week internship and the other is student teaching for two semsters.
